Great book judged on its own merit

Yes, this book has material from some other books by Weiss. I don't feel let down, however.

Like GTD, the ideas in this book are ground-breaking and some find it hard to accept. Not that it's hard to imagine how someone could figure this out, or that the concepts are so counter-intuitive. Just that most people think prices are a function of cost, or that there is 'a' market price for a given good or service.

What Weiss points out here is that value, or price, is subjective. This is something everyone experiences daily but can rarely notice.

Second, and most importantly, he outlines how to contract for consulting using a value-based fee, including the sales process. Weiss makes a good case for adopting this approach - good for the consultant and good for the client.

Here's an example of why value-based fees are good (not from the book): hourly, or 'time-metered' pricing will add incentive to increase the low-value '80%'of potential activities to a project. Sticking with value-based fees, or outcome-based fees, puts the incentive on focusing only on the '20%' of activities that will make a real difference. If I hire a consultant, I want results, not deliverables.

An Expanded Version of His Million Dollar Consulting

This book, and some of his other most recently published books, are basically 2nd tier, in that they take points addressed in decent detail in his earlier books: "Million Dollar Consulting", "The "Consulting Bible", and "Getting Started in Consulting", books I have rated as 5 stars and still do, and expand upon them. This expansion seems more to get enough material to write a new book, than to provide a lot more value-added material. I don't view them as a waste of money, because the expanded information provides additional supporting information from the author's viewpoint. But most of us are able to arrive at similar conclusions by thinking about the points in his highly rated books above, rather than gaining any new or major benefits from his added material. For the beginning consultant, these may fill more of a need than I saw. Having said all that, I am forced to add that the principle in the title has been instrumental in increasing my longevity and success in the consulting field -- the points that were first driven home to me in Alan's seminal book "Million Dollar Consulting". I just feel that he makes the point sufficiently in that book alone -- I am frequently rereading those three above, while barely referring to his more recent books, including this one.

Great Practical Advice - Especially for the Timid

Great book. I'm a "recovering attorney" who hasn't practiced law actively for several years. When I did, I hated the billable hour system as it did not reward me for the value I provided clients. Unfortunately, that billable hour mindset was ingrained in me. It's the way I think about billing. I am starting a consulting business and this book was recommended to me. It was difficult for me to "get it" at first. I had to read and re-read many pages/concepts. Not because the book was difficult to read, but because I was stuck in a different mindset. I slowly started to get it and enjoyed the book immensely. I will be using much of the advice in the book as I begin my consulting business and into the future. This book is a must read for anyone who sets a value on themselves according to time.

By the time she reached her late twenties, Eudora Welty (1909-2001) was launching a distinguished literary career. From the beginning, Eudora wove images of southern flora and gardens into her writing, yet few outside her personal circle knew that the images were drawn directly from her passionate connection to and abiding knowledge of her own garden.

Near the end of her life, Welty still resided in her parents’ house, but the garden-and the friends who remembered it-had all but vanished. When a local garden designer offered to help bring it back, Welty began remembering the flowers that had grown in what she called “my mother’s garden.” By the time Eudora died, that gardener, Susan Haltom, was leading a historic restoration. When Welty’s private papers were released several years after her death, they confirmed that the writer had sought both inspiration and a creative outlet there. This book contains many previously unpublished writings, including literary passages and excerpts from Welty’s private correspondence about the garden.

The authors of One Writer’s Garden also draw connections between Welty’s gardening and her writing. They show how the garden echoed the prevailing style of Welty’s mother’s generation, which in turn mirrored wider trends in American life: Progressive-era optimism, a rising middle class, prosperity, new technology, women’s clubs, garden clubs, streetcar suburbs, civic beautification, conservation, plant introductions, and garden writing. The authors illustrate this garden’s history―and the broader story of how American gardens evolved in the early twentieth century-with images from contemporary garden literature, seed catalogs, and advertisements, as well as unique historic photographs. Noted landscape photographer Langdon Clay captures the restored garden through the seasons.

About the Author
Susan Haltom, Ridgeland, Mississippi, is a garden designer and preservation and maintenance coordinator of the Eudora Welty garden. She has published in Mississippi Magazine, Mississippi Gardens, Old House Journal, and Magnolia, the journal of the Southern Garden History Society.

Jane Roy Brown, Conway, Massachusetts, is a freelance travel and garden writer with a focus on historic gardens and landscapes. She is also director of educational outreach for the Library of American Landscape History. She has published in Horticulture, Preservation, Garden Design, and the Boston Globe, and she serves as a contributing editor to Landscape Architecture.

Langdon Clay’s photographs have been featured in such publications as Jefferson’s Monticello by Howard Adams and From My Chateau Kitchen by Anne Willan. His art photography can be found in museums in Paris, London, New York, Chicago, New Orleans, and Jackson, Mississippi.

Beautiful photos, interesting angle on history

Eudora Welty grew up in an era when gardens were taken seriously, seen as an escape from the increasingly busy world and thought to prevent nervous breakdowns, so it's not surprising that both Welty's fiction and letters are full of references to flowers. This gorgeous book is packed with color photographs of the garden Welty helped restore before her death in 2001, a garden that had originally been tended by her mother, but flowers are not the sole focus of One Writer's Garden. While tracing the role of gardening in the lives of Welty and her mother authors Haltom and Brown also deliver an interesting angle on the social history of the early 1900's. Women's garden clubs were flourishing then with greenery seen as the cure for all of society's ills. Even during the height of the depression garden clubs were still multiplying and their members were busy planting trees along city streets and flowers in gas stations. One Writer's Garden is full of fascinating anecdotes of a time when magenta was not well thought of because, being the color of arsenic used in pesticides, it represented pollution in the minds of the purist gardening club women. Planting magenta flowers was actively discouraged then, and Eudora Welty's mother preferred to avoid walking down streets with that color in its gardens.

Beautifully written and illustrated!

This is a fascinating history, well illustrated with historic photos as well as images of the garden in its current, beautiful state. This volume deserves a place alongside "The Orchard: A Memoir" by Theresa Weir, on any bookshelf! The best garden book I have read in a long, long time.

A coffee table book that deserves to be read

This is a beautiful book,on fine paper with elegant typography and stunning color photographs, but it is more than a garden book and more than a coffee table book. It deserves to be read. The writing is as crisp and elegant as the book's design, and it is packed with interesting and often humorous detail about Eudora Welty's life and times, about gardening in the South in the early twentieth century, and about the influence of gardening on Welty's works. This would be a great present for anyone who loves the writings of Eudora Welty or who enjoys gardening. (Treat yourself, too.)

I am guessing that the over all story of the fighting between families finish with the other two books but I would like to finis

The story doesn't end and the information from the other Raintree books show/says the story changes who the lead characters are other members of the raintree family. I am guessing that the over all story of the fighting between families finish with the other two books but I would like to finish the love story of these two characters first. Over all I was very said by this purchase, wish i didn't buy it, and will not buy the rest.

I teach third grade, and we shared this book during a read-aloud. My students really enjoyed the illustrations as well as the concise explanation of what happened during this period. After the read-aloud I put the book on display. They are still looking at it--and the read-aloud was two weeks ago!

I love this entire series--it is really fun. I wouldn't use it as stand-alone to teach history, but to complement history curriculum. Read it to younger kids (5 or older) or older kids can read on their own and it should hold their interest.

While there's nothing wrong with this book, there's nothing to recommend it, either. The text is somewhat workmanlike, with very precise rhythm but not much charm. The full-color illustrations lack the personality needed to draw children into the story or to make Slinky an interesting character. Quite simply, the cat steals stuff, then stops. It's hard to imagine many preschoolers who would sit through the whole book. There's just nothing to it.

Another Great Story by Lynley Dodd

We have a cat and this is a great cat tale for our kids (3 and 1). Lynley Dodd's rhyming ans storytelling are very entertaining and Slinky Malinki is a beloved character. We bought this after first receiving "Slinky Malinki Open the Door" as a gift (another recommended title. It is amazing how hard it is to come across a children's book that has the perfect balance between good artwork and good writing. There are so many poorly written stories out there. My husband and I have no qualms reading this story over and over again to our kids.

Again Ms Dodd takes us on a furry adventure. This time with a kleptomaniac cat who just can't help himself from helping himself to the neighbourhood treasures! Her descriptions of Slinky Malinki are utterly delightful and she employs wonderful alliteration to accentuate the sensuality and fluidity of movement. Once again the use of rhyme and rhythm carry the reader through highs and lows in Slinky Malinki's adventures. Another delightful treasure I've not been able to let go off, despite children in their teens!

I came across Lynley Dodd and Slinky Malinki while browsing in a book store in London 8 years ago. I brought a copy back for a little friend and she LOVED it. When I had a kiddo of my own, I bought it for our collection. Our son is a huge fan. It probably doesn't hurt that we have two black cats that look a lot like Slinky Malinki. :) Lynley Dodd has a talent for rhythm that captivates children. We now own more books from the Slinky Malinki collection and love them all.

In the middle of this mud puddle I came to love a woman who would wake at 4:00 to do hours of tedious detailed research then work for hours in a tiny little pink house in a dingy border town in Mexico with people who others had cast out to die because they were not repairable on ordinary terms, at least not cost effective. After that she would write for hours to document her findings and research new information. She had a few supporters so she could be an independent researcher. When she came under the wrath of the cancer industry she suffered but she was able to secure still a few more years of research to uncover the root mechanisms of disease. She could only have persisted in her efforts if she really believed beyond a shadow of doubt that disease was a mistake that could be corrected...that this was fundamentally wrong...that we were doing this to ourselves because of ignorance...that we could change our minds and decide against all of this suffering and insanity. That was the gift she gave to me, it was the transmission of a new seed of trust in life, of trust in the laws of life, and trust in my own abilities to learn to live in compliance with reality and to reject the mud and choose a cleaner pathway. She restored my hope that the universe is nurturing of its children and has heard the sorry cries of suffering and has acted and will act to help us move on to more rational futures and more intelligent ways of living.

Why is it only now that I found out about this book? Hmmm.
This book is excellent!!!. I wish that I found it sooner. Too many of my friends are passing away from this devastating disease. I can now tell them to get this book and read it and follow all instructions. Thanks Dr. Clark.

Very good tips on just living in general, any ache's and pains, illnesses, flu, etc. I don't have cancer but this book was extremely enlighteneing and I tell anyone I know that does have it about this book.

Stories of people who are full of themselves

This is the fourth or fifth book I have read of Kerry Hamm and I have enjoyed them all. She is a hospital receptionist who tell stories about the people who come to the emergency room late at night or early morning. Thankfully, the names of patients have been changed to protect them from their stupidity. I find it kind of funny how the majority of potential patients expect to be seen in less than 20 minutes with the most trivial issues. As a young child I had to take my mother to a big city hospital where if you were seen in less than 12 hours. It was because of extensive bleeding, heart attacks, or you lost consciousness; so you can see I have very little sympathy for those for cake treat others with respect. She also tells some very sad stories and occasionally gives you suggestions for when you should come to the ER. I intend to read every one of her books.

Great stories! I'm so much more sympathetic to hospital workers now...
Per the author's request, I have to point out a typo. In the chapter about the mom with the awful children, she says she doesn't sensor her children. Should read "censor"

Easier and more profound than ever.

With the help of the knowledge that you will find between the covers of The Secret of Quantum Living, the third book from Frank Kinslow, there's a great chance that your life will be transformed. Not the wild, rollercoaster ride kind of transformation, but a gentle and peaceful kind that brings joy to all parts of life.
I have explored a number of healing techniques and have seen many interesting and pleasing results from all of them. Nothing, however, has impressed med quite as much as the method dr Kinslow has developed. Nausea and sickness getting replaced by a sense of peace, Fibromyalgia pain vanishing in minutes and severe calcification and deformation of a persons back and neck normalising over night, after twelve years of constant pain - a few examples from the past few months. But spectacular healing events aside, the most important part seems to be the sense of peace and wellbeing that comes with the application of this method. I've had the pleasure of meeting mr Kinslow and he seems to emit a sort of strange wellbeing that inspires healing in the people he encounters. Read this book and find out what it's all about. A hint: It's about doing nothing and watching everything getting done for you, leaving you laughing in the process.

Amazing System!!! Can't Say Enough!!!

I am awestruck at how easy this system is, and is by far more effective and powerful than the energy healing work i used to do...and that was awesome!

I was able to master the technique in two evenings of just following the directions in the book. I soon began to help others with it, as the author aptly suggests, and found a lot of feed-back returning to me from people saying that little "miracles" were showing up in their lives, on many levels. I am trying to maintain a list, but it's hard to keep up!

My only criticism is that the way the theory is presented in this book gets way too convoluted. Funny, though, when my mind was just preparing to snap, over it, Dr. Kinslow pretty much wrote not to worry about it, because the tech will work anyway! He also has a video out on YouTube that explains it simply and clearly!

QE, added to two or three other mainstays in my life, let me know that a human can reach full potential in one life-time and make a huge difference in their world, powerfully and pleasurably!

Yes there ARE short-cuts in life, and this is one of them!

Truly, a masterpiece. This book starts you in spiritual practice as you are reading it. Dr. Kinslow explains the most difficult matters in simple words and we, at last, understand those subjects that always were eluding us. It is a book charged with energy. When I reached page 25 I was full of enthusiasm. The exercises are crystal clear explained and very simple to do. Buy this book. It will change your life.
