The ACOA Trauma Syndrome: The Impact of Childhood Pain on Adult Relationships, by Tian Dayton PhD

Growing up in a home where there is addiction or relationship trauma puts a child at great risk for long-term, post-traumatic stress effects that adversely compromise adult relationships. Bestselling author, psychologist, and psychodramatist Tian Dayton examines this trauma through an exploration of the way the brain and body process frightening or painful emotions and experiences in childhood, and she shows how these traumas can become catalysts for unhealthy, self-medicating behaviors including drug and alcohol abuse, food issues, and sex, gambling, and shopping addictions.

Through Dr. Dayton's insightful analysis and thoughtful examination, Adult Children of Alcoholics will learn how and why the pain they experienced in childhood plays out in their adult partnering and parenting, and they will learn how to restore health and happiness through their resilience.

Introduction

The psychological rule says that when an inner situation is not made conscious, it happens outside, as fate. That is to say, when the individual . . . does not become conscious of his inner opposite, the world must perforce act out the conflict and be torn into opposing halves.
―Carl Jung

My father had two very distinct personalities. The same father who tenderly gave me café au lait on a spoon and fresh-squeezed orange juice in a baby glass, who listened to my childish sentences with such pride and pleasure, who dreamed impossible dreams for my future and worked all of his life to give me the best of everything―that same beloved father had a monster living inside of him. And that monster was as frightening to me as the other side of him was beautiful. And that monster grew stronger with each drink he took. At different times of the month, the week, and eventually the day, the monster would take over my father, and I would have no idea where my 'real' dad had gone.

Now and then, the monster in him would break loose and dance with the monster in all of us. The monster roared its terrible roar and sat in my father's chair in the living room. And I was, somehow, this monster's child. We each, at one time or another, shared his private hell with him until all of us lost our grip on normal.

But still, this was my family, my dad, my monster, and I had to do something to make emotional and psychological sense of living with a parent who made me feel both safe and terrified; a parent whom I loved and hated all at once. All children are faced with integrating parts of their parents that they both love and hate, but for the child in the alcoholic home, this becomes a uniquely challenging and daily experience.

When Dad went to (and left) treatment, there was no such thing as family healing. The wisdom of the day was essentially 'get the alcoholic sober and the rest of the family will get better automatically.' But that didn't happen. It didn't happen because the de-selfing experience of living on an emotional roller coaster had left us not knowing what normal life felt like. The healthy boundary that once surrounded the sweet and secure membrane of our lives was invaded and degraded by the disease of addiction. Just as we had a drunken father and a sober one, we had a drunken family and a sober one. It was as if we repeatedly passed behind some invisible curtain, reemerging each time into an alternate universe but still in our same, familiar living room. The scenes looked somewhat the same, but they felt different. Just maneuvering in and through these worlds required creative, complex, zany, and sometimes rather dysfunctional strategies.

We had no idea, in the 1960s, of how deeply affected an entire family becomes, how the trauma of living with the daily disruptions, distortions, and denial of addiction wraps its tentacles around childhood development and family development, changing everyone. But it doesn't have to be that way. Today we have something called recovery. Today we recognize that there is no dignity in hiding the truth and no freedom in keeping secrets. We learn, in recovery, to stand up and take responsibility for the part of the disease that lives in us and to take the necessary steps to treat it. And in doing this, we restore our hope, faith, and trust in life.

It is impossible to explain to someone who has not been through it how many little things go awry in a home where addiction has taken hold. Sure, I can say routines were thrown off; there was constant crisis that wasn't there before, but that doesn't fully describe it. What really hurts is that you can no longer count on anyone the way that you once did. You watch the parent you love turn the face that once smiled at you towards a bottle of alcohol or sink into a lying and degrading behavior. And then, just as mysteriously, he returns, clean-shaven, loving you once again, and remembering all the things you worried he had forgotten--that you're in a school play, what you like for breakfast, that you are still there (even though he comes and goes). You have him back. You're torn between letting it feel wonderful (which it does) and not letting it feel too good, because you know from experience that if it feels too good it will only hurt more when he slips away again. Then sure enough, you sense tension creeping in, you see situations devolving and unraveling before your eyes, and you know that it's coming. You can read all the signs. The gap between the worlds that had temporarily closed up begins to widen, and your addict disappears into some crevice, some wormhole in the universe, and he is gone as mysteriously as he came. He returns to his private nowhere where you can't find him. He hides in plain sight. And you have to lose him once again. And wait to see what happens. And just be in the family that is still there. Somewhat there. You see the disappointment on the faces around you; you see the confusion, the humiliation and the hurt. And simultaneously you see those family members shake their heads, square their shoulders, and mush on because the world is still chugging along even though the alcoholic has stepped off. You both appreciate and hate their efforts. You appreciate the ones who are able to plow through, even with blinders, because someone has to, because there are school buses to make, homework to be done, and appointments to get to. You hate it because you sense the sham underneath it. The pain inside you, inside everyone grows. But no one talks about it; because what would they say? It is too sad to look at, too much to sort out.

And changing one person might mean everyone has to change. And what would that mean--what would it look like and who would everyone be then? And besides, the family loses track of what's wrong. Is it even the alcohol you are looking at? Or the debting? Or the sexual liaisons and secrets? You hardly know any more. Addicts are so good at hiding their disease that for years it simply reads as their personality, their 'depression,' their 'negativity,' their 'expansive personality.'

The Japanese said it most succinctly: 'First the man takes the drink, then the drink takes the drink, then the drink takes the man.' And I would add that then the drink or disease takes the family. This disease is contagious. It's not only the addict who needs to sober up. Family members, too, need to become emotionally sober. Today, because treatment is so much more common, its progression can be caught before it spreads through the whole family. But the longer a family remains silent, in denial and living in the throes of managing the mind-numbing disease of addiction, the more symptomatic family members are likely to become.

Adult children of alcoholics (ACoAs) can and often do suffer from some features of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that are the direct result of living with the traumatizing effects of addiction. Years after we leave behind our alcoholic homes, we carry the impact of living with addiction with us. We import past, unresolved pain into present-day relationships, but without much awareness as to how or why. And that is what this book is about. How living with addiction or dysfunction creates cumulative trauma, the effects of which can play out over a life time. And what to do to get better. And how getting better will open doors inside of you that you hardly knew were there.

Family Trauma Need Not Be a Life Sentence
Trauma is actually fairly common; most people grow up with at least four adverse childhood experiences (Anda 2006). It is not necessarily the trauma that creates lasting problematic effects, but how we deal with it (or don't deal with it) when it occurs and afterward. Much can be done to ameliorate the effects of adverse childhood experiences. Supportive people, places to go that feel safe, and moving shock into some form of consciousness so pain does not remain hidden and unspoken can take a situation that could be traumatic and turn it into something that might be less damaging and potentially even character building.

Our culture creates a sort of myth of 'happily ever after' that is really no one's life. Feeling sad, anxious, or fearful is part of the human condition and does not necessarily require treatment. What makes trauma different from normal life stressors is that its effects tend to be long-lasting and repetitive and the patterns that are associated with a traumatic circumstance make their way through the generations. Our shock is long-lasting, engraved in our neurological systems and evidenced by how easily we can be triggered, how quickly our emotions go from zero to ten. We experience a loss of neuromodulation, which translates into our losing some of our ability to self regulate. Feelings, even intense ones, come and go; but unresolved, hidden and unprocessed trauma can last.

Because of the way the brain processes trauma, our most painful experiences may be the very ones that get repressed or thrown out of conscious awareness. While initially this allows us to function during overwhelming experiences that might otherwise immobilize us, eventually those feelings of fear and anxiety need to be felt rather than frozen. The family, while a perfect unit for raising young, can also be fertile ground for creating cumulative trauma throughout the developmental cycle. Our primary relationships are meant to nurture and sustain us until we are strong enough to survive on our own. When small children are terrified by the very same people who they would normally go to for comfort and safety, they become trapped in a confusing and disequilibrating system with no one to help them to restore their sense of 'normal' and their feeling of emotional balance. They are then forced to come up with immature strategies to manage what feels unmanageable. Oftentimes they just go numb. Or they dissociate; they disappear on the inside.

Recovery from the ACoA trauma syndrome is all about reclaiming the fragmented parts of self that are trapped in another psychological and emotional time and place and bringing them into the here and now. It is translating hidden emotion into words so that feelings can be processed, new insight and meaning can be gained, and experiences can be knitted back together with new understanding into a coherent and present-oriented picture of the functioning self and the self in relation to others. It is learning to live in the present rather than in the past or future.

This field has many pioneers whose remarkable sharing and collaborations over the years have lit a lamp for others to follow. Some of these pioneers are Margaret Cork, Claudia Black, Sharon Wegscheider-Cruse, Robert Ackerman, Jane Middleton-Moz, Stephanie Brown, Don Coyhis, Jerry Moe, Janet Woititz, Rokelle Lerner, Faye Calhoun, Jeannette Johnson, Phil Diaz, Patricia O'Gorman, Frances Brisbane, Stephanie Covington, Anna Whiting Sorrel, Hoover Adger, Lala Strassner, Cathleen Brooks Weiss, Ann Smith, Ellen Morehouse, Patrick Carnes, John Bradshaw, and Timmen Cermak.

Research on trauma made my own work come alive and provided a research base that began my own exploration of what I call the ACoA Trauma Syndrome; much gratitude to Bessel van der Kolk, Judith Hermann, and Lisa Najavitts for their seminal work in this area. Another leg of the stool that the syndrome stands on is attachment research, which I apply to my understanding of how childhood development is affected by growing up with addiction. Those in the area of attachment by whom I have been led are Maria Montessori, Jonathon Bowlby, D. W. Winnicott, Alan Schore, Stanley Greenspan, and Daniel Siegel. Robert Anda's research on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) has elevated awareness and brought attention to the long-term impact that growing up with addiction can have on both mental and physical health, making an invaluable contribution toward policy in this area.

Psychodrama is my method of treating people who have been traumatized or people simply looking to increase their own level of spontaneity, creativity, and aliveness. In this area I have been most impacted by J. L. Moreno, Zerka Moreno, and Dr. Robert Siroka, whose excellent training and vision for this method lit my own healing spirit.

It is my hope that by the end of this book you will have an in-depth understanding of trauma; it is also my hope that reading this book will help to make trauma seem less strange and threatening to cope with and help you to develop various strategies for lifestyles that both minimize its occurrence and intensity and process it before it comes to have a life of its own. In Part 1, we discuss and draw pictures of the black-and-white world of the family system that contains addiction. In Part II, you will learn how your mind and body become affected and infected through living with the trauma-engendering dysfunctional relationship dynamics that surround addiction. In Part III, we explore case studies involving process addictions or the many forms of compulsive behaviors that self-medication can assume.

In Part IV, we'll take a step down the path of healing from the ACoA Trauma Syndrome and offer tips on attitude and lifestyle changes that build resilience and strength. In Part V, we'll look at ways of breaking the intergenerational chain of pain. We'll see how the past can be separated from the present so that we can live with mindful, positive purpose in the here and now.
Many who embrace recovery come to experience it as a journey of self-discovery, one of expansion into a new sense of self, self in relationships, and meaning and purpose in life. Many find that the promises of twelve step program do come true and they 'do not regret nor wish to close the door' on their past, because through processing it, they have come to a deeper sense of aliveness and self-confidence. Or as Edmund Spenser wrote in The Faeire Queene, 'For whatsoever from one place doth fall, Is with the tide unto an other brought: For there is nothing lost, that may be found, if sought.'

I feel understood, and I feel like I understand, too.
By Poodle
I purchased this book originally with the idea to better understand my significant other, an adult child of an alcoholic. I am a recovering alcoholic (18 years sober), and my grandfather was an alcoholic. I never saw my father (an ACOA) drink, but he said he stopped drinking when we (my brother and I) were kids so that we wouldn't have the life that he did, growing up with an alcoholic father. So many things in this book affirmed who I am--I felt odd and confused and sad and defective as a child, and as if something bad had happened to me, but have no recollection of any huge trauma. This book affirmed my experience and my feelings. It has helped me be more compassionate toward myself and to my significant other, who struggles with his own ACOA issues. I read many MANY books on recovery and alcoholism over the years, and this is the FIRST one that I have ever felt so validated and so helped by! This book helped me understand why I react the way I do sometimes and how to change. I recommend it for ACOAs and alcoholics and addicts alike. Amazing book.

Recommended for anyone suffering from the affects of alcoholism; very insightful
By Alison R
I am an ACOA and I am working a 12 step program in Al anon. I came across this book and I am amazed at how insightful it has been for me. I was unaware of the fact that those who suffer from the affects of alcoholism could suffer from PTSD and now after reading this book I am aware that many of my feelings and behaviors mimic that of suffering from PTSD symptoms. I am grateful to have the awareness and to know that by continuing to work my Al anon program along with the help of a therapist these unhealthy behaviors can be reversed and I can grow to live a healthy life for me and the people in my life. I would definitely recommend this book to a friend or anyone else suffering from the affects of someone Else's drinking.

This book will change your life for the better!
By Amazon Customer
Truly brilliant explanation of what happens to change the brain and thought processes, and physiological responses to every day stimuli in trauma victims. I thought it was just that I was defective, because I was told and shown that in so many awful ways by my abusive family of origin. I endured years of abuse that started with a stepparent, and which left me a target for further bullying and abusive relationships. If I had understood what happened to me I would have dealt with the fallout from the abuse differently because I would have had tools to help reframe events and change my thought patterns. I wasn't born this way, I was outgoing and confident and empathetic, and I ended up with undiagnosed PTSD. Nobody knew 40 years ago that kids from abusive and dysfunctional families suffered this way, but now it's recognized and there is some help available. We don't get to go back in time for do-overs to have the life we should have had, but we can start from where we are now and make the time we have left much better. Even if we are older, there is still hope and this book is a great place to start healing from the inside out.

Complex Recipes with Stunning Results
By Andrew'sMom
Absolutely gorgeous book with complicated, complex recipes that will challenge most cooks. The recipe for an Heirloom Tomato Salad has 15 ingredients itself! That being said - if you want to rock restaurant quality Indian food this is the book for you. Most recipes have many components some of which need to be prepared in advanced but the results look certainly worthwhile. Be warned this is not for the faint of heart. It is a totally beautiful book with delicious recipes and stunning photographs but these dishes are not for a Tuesday night after soccer -- most of these recipes are projects - challenging, worthwhile projects but projects nonetheless.

Beyond the extraordinaire
Beautiful details and pictures
But only for professionals

Sorry not for home cooks eh~eh you certainly cant do this at home unless you have fully equipped kitchen with pantry full of regular, special and very special rear ingredients and smiley pocket with countless monthly kitchen budget, what you think Michelin Starred Cooking is joke and can be replicate easy.... think again.....
You definitely need a superior cooking and plating skills to replicate most dishes
Seafood, game, meat, and vegetable sections are just amazing but very very weak on desserts may be one or two are do able other wise ~eh~ quite useless, surprisingly they didn't add traditional sweets or desserts like Kheer, Firni, Gaajar halwa etc
Nothing much covered on serving styles or variations of Naan, Roti, or traditional Biriyanis.
Alcohol lovers can find verity of drink recipes but nothing plain traditional drinks being touched or acknowledged.
I am convinced for 4 stars (I deducted 1-star for disappointing sweet & dessert and not adding traditional drink serving styles and ideas)

A complete listing of every recipe in the book: Good for new primal chefs; not dairy-free
By Gen of North Coast Gardening
I've been eating mostly-primal and paleo for some years now, and Mark Sisson's wonderful books have made it so much easier. It's not that I want to eat paleo-ified versions of pancakes, breads, or other unhealthy foods all the time, but it is nice to have the option to eat familiar foods sometimes and know I won't feel sick afterwards. That's where Mark's books really shine, is in bridging the gap between familiar and primal foods so we can feel genuine enjoyment in all of our food choices and not have to feel like we are missing out.

The condiments and sauces are a place where I have struggled, because even though I have gotten pretty creative with roasting vegetables and pureeing them with spices and coconut milk to make sauces, doing my own homemade mayo, etc, I haven't felt like my own homemade sauces and condiments have been as good as I'd like, so I have occasionally used storebought dressings or traditional recipes with dairy or starches as thickeners when I have been too busy to try researching yet another new recipe that might be "the one".

So given that I am such a huge fan of Mark's work, and given that I really needed ideas for sauces, dressings, and toppings, I thought that this book would be a slam dunk hit. And I am really enjoying it. But I have to say I'm a little bit disappointed because I was really hoping for a number of warm sauces that I could use over spaghetti squash, vegetables, and meats to make them seem like old familiar favorites. While this book shines in the dressings and condiments department, there are very few sauces in the book that would be good warm, over dinner foods.

In addition, some of those sauces that are warm and would taste good over vegetables and meat really have not been adjusted much from their traditional origins, so they still contain a LOT of dairy. For example, the Mornay sauce includes whipping cream, butter, almond butter, a cup of cheese, and nutmeg. While it certainly an interesting touch to include almond butter in a cream sauce to thicken it, there are already a few different Paleo -ish ways of thickening a sauce, such as arrowroot starch or even pureed root vegetables of some kind. What I'm really looking to get rid of is the cheese, which I don't think of as being primal or Paleo at all. The ranch dressing is another example, since it contains sour cream and buttermilk. I don't need a special primal book to tell me how to make ranch dressing using dairy - any recipe book would do that just fine.

I know Mark says that high-fat dairy is okay if you tolerate it well and especially if you can find raw sources, but I think the vast majority of us do not tolerate it well and cannot find good sources for raw dairy, so I was really hoping that a book about primal sauces would include some more innovative ideas for substituting out the dairy.

Another element that was a mild disappointment is that a lot of the sauces are things that have never really been off the diet in the first place. There are a number of different kinds of gravy, for example, which has always been pretty easy to make in a totally Paleo way. Bolognese and marinara sauces were something I made in my first week of being primal, and really had no issue eliminating the teaspoon of sugar contained in most recipes. There are about five different gravy recipes and five different tomato-based recipes, plus a number of vinaigrette recipes, so those kinds of sauces took up a lot of space in the book and didn't provide a lot of new ideas for me personally. There were also a number of dry spice blends included such as for taco seasoning, chili powder, and barbecue rub. I don't need a special primal book to tell me how to make a dry seasoning blend. I buy a special primal book to tell me how to make things that other cookbooks wouldn't tell me. I'm happy for extra information like this to be included, but I really wish the meat of the book had been focused on unusual solutions for making sauces that are usually off the diet in a new, healthy way.

A note: Mark has a little milk symbol in the table of contents which is meant to indicate that a recipe has dairy in it. However, I found at least one recipe, the coconut lime sauce, that is not listed as having dairy even though it does. They also do not consider butter a dairy product, which is fine in my view because I can always substitute ghee, but you should be aware of that you are doing a whole 30 or trying to avoid all dairy. A large proportion of the recipes do contain butter.

Now, for the good: there are a ton of cold sauces such as pestos (which do list parmesan as an ingredient but say you can substitute half an avocado instead, which is an idea that I really like), and a lot of really fun salad dressings and dips that you can use with vegetables. The tarragon dressing, which uses hard-boiled eggs to get a creamy consistency, is brilliant. The chocolate pudding sauce, which uses coconut milk and avocado for a delightfully rich mouth feel and texture, was divine. I can't wait to try the hot harissa sauce, the sweet potato bacon dip, the roasted cauliflower dip, artichoke dip and the coconut milk whipped cream, which I've seen on Mark's site but have never actually tried.

There are also a lot of ideas that I want to adapt to be dairy free, such as creamy arugula sauce, which contains arugula, sour cream, fresh parsley leaves, and salt. I also want to try to adapt the coconut lime sauce, which contains creme fraîche, coconut milk, lime juice, and lime zest. I'm hoping there's some way that I can use a non-dairy product in place of the creme fraîche in this recipe.

Overall, I'm enthused about a lot of the ideas in this book, but the more I read it, the more I realize that almost all of the recipes that I'm truly excited about are ones that use dairy. Given that most of the recipes I'm interested in trying will need some form of substitution in order for me to eat them, I probably could have gotten almost as much benefit from buying a traditional cookbook about sauces and just used it as a jumping off point for my own experimentation. That said, I really enjoy cooking and have been making my own paleo pestos, condiments, vinaigrettes, and sauces with pureed veggies for some time, so it's not that there aren't good ideas here, it's just that it doesn't fill that niche I was hoping it would - of bridging the gap between food I miss eating and food that is on the diet. If, however, you are new to making your own paleo condiments, sauces, and dressings, you will definitely find a lot of great inspiration here for interesting spice combinations to add to a vinaigrette and ways of making some basic, delicious condiments and sauces that will be a staple of your primal plate.

Here's a listing of every single recipe in the book (I have listed the dairy ingredients separately, but have not specified butter as A. there's a lot of butter in the book and it would take forever and B. you can always substitute ghee if you need the milk proteins gone)

Sauces:
Hollandaise sauce
bearnease sauce
horseradish sauce (1 cup sour cream)
Mornay sauce (3/4 C whipping cream, 1 cup cheese)
marsala sauce (1 T of optional whipping cream, but coconut milk is listed as a sub)
almost traditional turkey gravy
roasted meat gravy
sausage gravy (1 cup whole cream, coconut milk listed as a sub, but since the entire recipe is comprised of sausage, almond butter and cream, I'm not yet convinced that coconut milk will be a great sub because there is not much to make the dish taste more like cream and less like coconut)
onion gravy
onion mushroom sauce
quick mushroom sauce
slow simmered mushroom sauce
Bolognese sauce
marinara sauce
pancetta tomato sauce
peppery roasted tomato sauce
Veracruz sauce - basically a tomato sauce with olives

coconut shallot sauce
lemon butter sauce

Indispensable In My Kitchen!
By LCW
I cannot and will not be without this cookbook. It is full of easy and quick, well, sauces, dressings, and toppings, lol. Every single recipe has been delicious.

One of the best things about this cookbook is that it makes for a dinner on the table in lightening speed. Steam some veggies or make a salad, grill or pan fry some meat or a burger, and use one of the recipes from this book. It makes for endless variety but easy, fast, healthy. Perfect for weeknights!

Here are a few of my favorites:

Tartar Sauce: I eat more fish because of this recipe. Simply amazing. And it works on everything from sole to salmon. And salmon cakes!!

Hollandaise Sauce: So simple but so flavorful. A little goes a long way and a unique way to use it is as a dressing for a chopped salad with hard boiled eggs, tomatoes, avocado, cucumbers, scallions, and leftover roasted chicken. Of course it's great for the more typical uses as well.

Sausage Gravy: 3 ingredients and amazing flavor. I watch my carbs so I top a spaghetti squash omelette (from the Quick and Easy primal blueprint cookbook) with this. I recommend the pork sausage from US Wellness.

Spicy Poblano sauce: Perfect for a mexican fix without the junk. Pan sear any meat and top with this.

Creamy Arugula Sauce: So summery and refreshing. I add some lemon juice and turn it into a dressing.

Stir Fry Sauce: Delicious!!! I like to add a tsp of red boat fish sauce for some extra flavor.

Coconut Milk Whipped Cream: Decadent! And guilt free. I top 1/2 cup of berries and sprinkle some slivered almonds for dessert.

Ranch Dressing: The best ranch dressing hands down. I don't do dairy often but this is a nice splurge for me.

Bacon Dressing: Need I say more?

Sesame Coconut Dressing: Yummy for an asian style salad. Add some almond butter to make it even more decadent.

Mayonnaise: To me most homemade mayo recipes are all pretty much the same. Oil, eggs, salt, lemon juice, and/or mustard of some sort. The real difference is the oil you use. I use this as my basic mayo and do 1/2 and 1/2 of avocado oil and light olive oil.

Blueberry Chutney: I've made this with cherries too and it's yummy both ways.

Taco Seasoning: awesome way to avoid the stuff in the packets...with all the junk.

Nori Salt Blend: Mmmm! Reminds me of furikake. I use it on eggs and asian salads.

So as you can see I use this cookbook all the time. I never thought I'd get so much use out of a book without any "real" recipes. This has become one of my favorite cookbooks though!

Great Way to Convince the Wife...
By Stephen Vossler
As an ardent believer and practitioner of the Primal Blueprint way of eating/exercising/playing/living I am always trying to motivate my friends and family to implement it into their lives by touting the benefits. However my wife has been a particularly tough nut to crack and is not really motivated by the benefits. This is because she is a very picky eater. She loves food, but it must be very flavorful and have the right texture. The thing she was most dissuaded by when looking at the food on my plate was the lack of sauces and robust flavors. I'm perfectly content to eat a steak with sauteed onions and mushroom and a dollop of ghee on it. However, that's generally too bland, and too heavy for her. So I saw this book and ordered it immediately. It has been just the ticket for my wife and me. I have finally gotten her to eat healthier and I am also enjoying my food even more than I was before. It's a perfect solution with exactly zero compromise in health or flavor.

I strongly recommend this book (in combo with any other paleo/primal cookbook) (my wife and I have been loving the Primal Blueprint Cookbook) to anybody who is having trouble getting their kids or spouse to enjoy healthy paleo or primal foods.

Women in the 1920S, by Pamela Horn

For many women the 1920s was a time of change after the pressures – and opportunities – of the First World War. For a number, war casualties meant a life of spinsterhood, which some turned to good account by enjoying their new independence. The current fashions, with their close-fitting dresses, cloche hats and cropped hair, emphasized this spirit of female emancipation, but it was 1918 before the vote was granted to women (and then only to those aged thirty or more) and the unemployment and uncertainty of the peacetime world brought unforeseen problems.

This book examines how women responded to the new challenges and the difficulties of those years, from the revival of the round of High Society by the social élite, against a background of sometimes vast personal and financial losses, to the lives of the new middle-class professionals, who found social as well as domestic freedom, and working-class women employed in the still traditional milieu of factory and domestic service – as well as those who found their way on to the shop or restaurant floor. Home life, the bringing up of children, and attitudes toward family planning, are other topics under review, as are the widening leisure and political activities which some women could now afford.

Drawing on family papers, contemporary publications and archive research, this book, complemented by a wealth of photographs, cartoons and other illustrations, presents a vivid picture of what women’s lives were like during the period. It will appeal to students of women’s history, social historians and to those with a general interest in the subject.

Buy this book!
By Marilyn
Great book; quick to read; makes a lot of sense. The title is sort of misleading though. It's more about getting rid of the extra stuff (including things we do everyday) in your life. I bought this book after going to an estate sale for a friend's mother who had recently passed away. Her house and out buildings were FILLED with STUFF that she hadn't used or touched in years, items that none of her family wanted or needed. Seeing all that unwanted STUFF prompted me to buy this book. Now I'm happily cleaning closets of unworn clothing, unused appliances, dishes, table clothes, fabric and sewing notions, books I haven't opened in 5 or more years, collectibles that are just there 'because', etc. I am feeling freer with every box I pack for an upcoming garage sale!

This was a great concise read that really inspired me. While I've read her blog, the book was well laid out in a logical manner so you could review different areas easily as opposed to working through various blog topics. Good way to really get started or for anyone new to the concept.

I enjoyed that it wasn't just about 'stuff' but also got into commitements and relationships. While I am not new to mimimalism, I found it made me stop and take an inventory of some areas that need a bit of decluttering.

Great purchase as a gift for friends and family.

A must read!!!
By Evamomelina
I'm very happy I bought this book!!! I was pleasantly surprised as I had expected to read some of the usual repetitive things as usually seen in most minimalist books; but in the contrary, it brings new ideas and ways to achieve them. I can go back to it many times as a point of reference for different needs. The book Do Less, delivers a great and unique format to guide you through your minimalist endeavors. I like the fact that its not only aimed at one type of lifestyle; whether you are a single person looking to streamline your life, or a parent who's looking to make some changes, it resonates at any point you are in your life.

Late Objects Version: C++ How to Program, 7/e is ideal for Introduction to Programming (CS1) and other more intermediate courses covering programming in C++. Also appropriate as a supplement for upper-level courses where the instructor uses a book as a reference for the C++ language.

This best-selling comprehensive text is aimed at readers with little or no programming experience. It teaches programming by presenting the concepts in the context of full working programs and takes a late objects approach. The authors emphasize achieving program clarity through structured and object-oriented programming, software reuse and component-oriented software construction. The Seventh Edition encourages students to connect computers to the community, using the Internet to solve problems and make a difference in our world. All content has been carefully fine-tuned in response to a team of distinguished academic and industry reviewers.

The Late Objects Version delays coverage of class development until Chapter 9, presenting control statements, functions, arrays and pointers in a non-object-oriented, procedural programming context.

Terrific book
By Vijay Krishna
I have always been a fan of the Deitel series and have read quite a few books - C, C++ and Java How 2 Program as well as H.M. Deitel's book on OPerating Systems. I have little doubts in recommending this book to anyone starting C++.
So much to say about this book, however I'll limit myself to a few points which I found salient:
This book does not keep referring to C, so you won't get bugged down. (In case you want to learn C, try 'C How to Program' by the same authors.)
This book has been written keeping the beginner in mind (beginner = someone new to programming). So, it contains good, solid, perfect, working code you can try out.
Each page is littered with observations on Good Programming Practices and Software Engineering. That helps in refinement of code, so you need not buy another book to find out how to code 'effectively'.
The exercise questions are elaborate and will keep the reader busy for hours on end. But all that's time that's spent usefully.
And this book does not leave out those who already know C++. It's as good as any book for an intermediate level programmer.
An excellent book. Buy this one, it's certain that this will be the last C++ book you'll need.

Mediocre book with no improvements from 8th Edition - Will drain your enthusiasm
By Rae_Jr
This book suffers from all the shortcomings of the 8th edition. I was first planning on doing a detailed review, but came to realize I would be repeating exactly what many readers pointed out in the previous editions. Besides, the authors don't care much to read them. The prudent reader would do well to read the reviews of the 8th edition to have an idea of what to expect at C++ How to Program (8th Edition).

For the sake of completeness, I will point of a few things.

You are looking at the most expensive book on C++ ever written, with nothing magical to show for that $110+ price [edit: with the fall semester underway, the price is now $135+]. We know books marketed as textbooks are targeted towards students who allegedly have deep pockets (from grants, parents' savings, or loans), hence the $100+ price tag. Simply put, it says a lot that the authors take part in this robbery. In comparison, a reference such as The C++ Programming Language by Stroustrup costs $54; C++ Primer Plus, by Prata and Stephen is a meager $38, while Effective C++ by Scott Meyers sits at $35. Their content far exceeds the quality and breadth of Deitel (though they are not formatted as textbooks). Furthermore, to make the biggest profits, the Deitel series churns out new editions at $100+ every other year, so that students can't purchase used copies for cheap from their graduating friends (exercises will mismatch). These morally despicable plays on the price of this book itself justify 2 stars off.

The chief issue with this book though is the incoherent wordiness used. At the time of this review, the publisher has chosen not to enable Amazon's "Click to Look Inside" (draw your own conclusions). So I can't point you to live examples (I will update this once they do). C++ is not an easy language to learn, so random wordiness is your enemy.

As an example, imagine being explained the difference between declaring a pointer ptr1 as { const int * ptr1 } vs. using { int * const ptr1 }. Both declarations are valid, and optional, but the difference is critical and a life-saver. But to explain this, the authors do not bother with short and sweet examples. Instead, they roll out paragraphs of frustrating text. If somehow you make it through those explanations, by the time you get to heavy concepts such as 'base class virtual constructors', the STL best practices, etc., this book will have you gouging your eyes out. Now some subjects deserve 1000 pages, but jumping around with lengthy explanations does disservice. Programming explained right is beautiful.

In addition, the layout of the book is atrocious: the authors use pages of code to demonstrate simple concepts, even in the first part of the book. Why not keep examples short and compile-worthy? That way the reader can type them, see what matters, change things around, and see what breaks. Instead of that, the lines of code never finish, and the reader has little incentive to type it all out (which is so important). Even worse, later chapters refer to lengthy examples listings in previous chapters (warning to Kindle readers).

Again, the reviews of the previous editions stand, so check them out. This book is dangerous for beginners because it risks discouraging them. The table of content, coloring, and the first chapter of the book are attractive. But things quickly unravel. I never heard of a professional using this book as a reference, and for the beginner, notice how even the 5-star reviews encourage this being a supplement instead. I would give it 3 stars if the price wasn't a bad joke.

-=-= If you have some options in choosing a book, here are my recommendations below -=-=-=-

If you are a true beginner and have to start at C++, pick up C++ Primer Plus (6th Edition) (Developer's Library). I question the wisdom of using C++ as you very first programming language (see the first comment to this review below), but hey, maybe you don't have a choice: C++ Primer Plus should serve you well then.

If you know a good bit how to program, but need to get up to speed on C++, I recommend Sams Teach Yourself C++ in One Hour a Day (7th Edition). I usually hate the "Teach yourself X in Y hours" trick, but this author nails it. You will be going dilly-dolly until you finish the book, without needing too much motivation. This book needs more coding exercices for beginners though, so I wouldn't recommend it as a first programming book.

If you need a complete reference, I recommend the powerhouse The C++ Programming Language, 4th Edition. The author wrote the C++ language, and knows what he is talking about.

If you know C++, but would like to learn a few cool tricks, Effective C++: 55 Specific Ways to Improve Your Programs and Designs (3rd Edition) does the job quite well.

There might be more out there, but these gets my vote.

Comprehensive guide . Not the cheapest book out there but well worth it
By Lazarus
Unlike many C++ books, this seems to cover pretty much everything - from getting started through to the meat of C++ and also covering the Standard Template Library (STL). It is written in a somewhat didactic style with plenty of full examples, end of section summaries and tests (Q&A) to ensure the principles have hit home. Unlike many other C++ texts, it is clearly aimed at teaching from scratch, rather than 'starting from C'.

The format is great - color is used for section and for syntax highlighting which aids reading and comprehension.

There are a number of 'tips' scattered throughout the text highlighting frequent misunderstandings and programming pitfalls. The title is justified; the book teaches the fundamentals of C++ AND also how to program - hopefully how to write a good, well structured, easily maintainable C++ program.

The appendices are available in pdf only - a shame the entire book isn't also available that way also. I suspect the appendices were not included in the printed book to (understandably) save paper.

The one niggle with this is that it's a sizable tome already and in order to keep it below 'telephone book' size, it is printed on very thin paper (thinner than that in my bible). The thin paper causes the reverse side to be visible and also means that care is required not to tear the pages.

In all, this is an excellent book for both learning and reference. Highly recommended.
