Awesome book! Buy it
By Barman
Buy this book before any other Thermo books. The best introductory book on Thermodynamics.

I have recently read Thermo for Dummies and it is probably the best thermo introductory text out there. Dummies is only 339 pages and a very readable explanation of thermo. The examples are very good, practical and clear. For an under grad who has no intro to thermo buy this book hand down. This book will take from being a Dummy to top of your class. Bravo, Professor Pauken well done.

Pauken lacks practice problems but is very clear and readable and the examples more than make up for the lack of problems. I would by Schaum's or equal for the problems and this one for the explanation of thermo.

I also like CRC's Thermo book by Ka Fu Wong. It is more geared for the practicing engineer but an under grad would have little problem understanding it.

I have also read Cengal and Morans books are very good and readable but long.

As an undergrad I was tortured with Von Wheelan and Sontag in a wash out class. It turned so many young engineers off to Thermo which is shame for the United States. We need every new engineer we can turn out. This book should help turn the tide.

Again Bravo, Prof Pauken a great book.

Thermodynamics for Dummies
By Paul M. Sund
I found this book very helpful. I need to read certain thermodynamic facts that other people would think don't need to be stated because they're too obvious. This books states the obvious, and because of this, I was able to understand the subject better. For instance, in thermodynamics, they discuss heat engines. I never made the connection that the engine in my car is a heat engine. I figured the spak plug ignites the fuel/air mixture and that pushes the piston down, I didn't understand how it's a heat engine. This book explains that the spark plug ignighting the fuel/air mixture is the heat in (Qin) part of the cycle and that it's a heat engine. Now I understand.

I also didn't understand how air-conditioning works, now I do.

I didn't understand what enthalpy was, now I do.

I didn't understand how to use entropy, now I do.

I'm still trying to understand the difference between a gas and a vapor, but this book has helped in that regard too.

Thermo explained...
By Shannon
The book takes you through much of what I was supposed to learn in a first semester Thermodynamics class and just was not clearly explained. I wish I had had it then. With this book, some basic Algebra, Chemistry, Physics, and such you can go a long way toward getting that engineering degree you always wanted.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book
By Kindle Customer
I give this book three stars for the typos and misspellings and four stars for how the books grabs your attention. And since the author is family and I learned more about our family, I give it five stars.

But in all seriousness, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was captivating and had me hooked. I laughed, shook my head and had my jaw drop several times. I also learned several things about "street life." Reading Harlem Herion(e), made me realize that during the (80s/90s), I experienced and remember those decades completely and differently than Ms Tee. But then again, I am a Queens girl.

All in all I enjoyed this book. Not condoning or glorifying the street life but am appreciative and in awe of the fact that someone has written a kind of tell all book about their life. Bravo Ms Tee, bravo.

Interesting urban drama from Point of View perspective. Being in the think of drug trafficking and violence is usually a glamourous spectacle mostly told by those who give us happy endings. This one speaks of pain and the dear loss of friends and lovers that the author will hold in her heart forever. Even though, she places those feelings in ours. I have read street novels such as Dopefiend, Iceberg Slim, and this tale of street drama is that family as well. Great read, as if she were talking to you face to face.

Good read if you really wanna get the imagery of what Harlem was like in the 80s- late 90s era. An era that we more than likely will never see again. Her book is actually like a piece of history. You can visualize everything she says so well. I would like to see more books like this from that era from a females perspective.

Dancing Skeletons: Life and Death in West Africa, by Katherine A. Dettwyler

1995 Margaret Mead Award winner! This personal account by a biocultural anthropologist illuminates important, not-soon-forgotten messages involving the more sobering aspects of conducting fieldwork among malnourished children in West Africa. With nutritional anthropology at its core, Dancing Skeletons presents informal, engaging and oftentimes dramatic stories from the field that relate the author’s experiences conducting research on infant feeding and health in Mali. Through fascinating vignettes and honest, vivid descriptions, Dettwyler explores such diverse topics as ethnocentrism, culture shock, population control, breastfeeding, child care, the meaning of disability and child death in different cultures, female circumcision, women’s roles in patrilineal societies, the dangers of fieldwork, and the realities involved in researching emotionally draining topics. Readers will alternately laugh and cry as they meet the author’s friends and informants, follow her through a series of encounters with both peri-urban and rural Bambara culture, and struggle with her as she attempts to reconcile her very different roles as objective ethnographer, subjective friend, and mother in the field. A Critical Review
By Alexi Atkins
Dancing Skeletons is a different kind of ethnography. Katherine Dettwyler's story, nonfiction though it may be, cannot be equated with other ethnographies documenting women in Africa. Quite frankly, she doesn't document their lives at all, she interprets them. While this book can definitely be appreciated for its emotional appeal to help the malnourished children in West Africa, I do not believe it should be used as an academic authority on the matter.
For one thing, Dettwyler relies heavily on comparisons with Western culture, which invariably place Malian culture on the losing side of the duality. In Malian culture, women are circumcised according to custom. She says that "people seemed to accept it without question" (27), that women who she asked about sex often didn't understand "the point" of her question, and that women "had other problems to worry about; they couldn't concern themselves with the issue of sexual pleasure, or lack thereof" (29). All this rhetoric implies a superiority of female sexual practices in the West because our women are allowed sexual pleasure and understand what it means to have sexual rights. While Dettwyler immediately turns to an amusing anecdote about the Fat Lady from Timbuktu, I was left a little miffed at her treatment of this practice. While no one I know would condone it, comparing the practices of the West with Malian custom in a way that privileges the Western perspective will never help Malian women.
Dettwyler repeatedly creates this dichotomy between the way things are in Mali and the way they would be back in America. While this comparison is understandable given her social context, it has no place in an academic ethnography. As post-modern academics have come to realize, it is the Western tendency to create these dichotomies that undermines the cultural value systems of third world countries and privileges the Western perspective. We cannot effectively create positive change if we cannot see the value and importance of outside cultures. Dettwyler's biased emotional response to cultural issues turns them into tools to assert patriarchal Western authority.
Such interpretations were repeatedly emphasized throughout the work, especially when it came to food and health practices. She repeatedly admonishes their inability to understand the connection between food and health, and more generally to imagine a life outside their own. With such assertions, she limits the Malian people rather than empowering them. The insistence upon their inability to understand, their lack of imagination, and their reliance on tradition undervalues their intellectual capabilities, reinforcing the patriarchal notion of superiority. It perpetuates the idea Westerners have more resources, and therefore know more than West Africans, and therefore must have the answers to all their problems. Solutions will only come from empowering these people and educating them, not essentializing and exploiting them.
I am not arguing that this is not a good book--I merely believe that it should be read with a grain of salt. The presence of Dettwyler's opinions and emotions, especially with respect to her family and friends, makes the book a much easier, funnier, and often more enjoyable read than many other ethnographies. Yet if approach to anthropology became the norm once more, we would lose all the progress that has been made in recent years to critically analyze the social structures that keep Third World countries at the bottom of the pyramid. While I can appreciate this book as a good story about an American woman in West Africa, it cannot be validated as an authority on the Malian people.

Dancing SkeletonsBook Review
By Rahma Mkuu
Katherine Dettwyler, a medical anthropologist shares her incredible story of studying malnutrition in Mali, West Africa, through her book, Dancing Skeletons. She tells of her journey in search for growth patterns in malnourished children. As a researcher, she is interested in learning what happens to malnourished children as they grow and how they develop into healthy adults.
First, Dettwyler strongly believes that "Language is a source of immense power." (Dettwyler,1994). She shares her pride of being able to speak Bambara, the local language. She is able to convince the reader that language is the key to forming strong bonds and creating trust with the target population that one is studying. Her accounts of discussing sensitive topics from female circumcision and sexual foreplay, to the use of contraceptives in an open way with the women is proof of the importance of speaking the language. Dettwyler's ability to speak Bambara gives her an even deeper insight of the community and the reader is able to take away many aspects of the Malian culture. Conversation is not the only thing that connects her to the community. She also becomes part of the community through her actions. She rides the bache a pickup truck used as public transportation, she eats with her fingers, and even bargains at the market, Dettwyler is not just the observer in her story, but also the participant.
Second, Dettwyler is able to prove that health is a complex issue to study and that a multidimensional and ecological perspective has to be taken into consideration when conducting research or providing health services. She is shocked when she learns that lack of money is not necessarily the only issue that contributes malnutrition. When she asks women what they would do if given extra money to spend, many women respond by saying they would probably spend it on material goods and not food. She also learns that it is custom for children to eat last and adults to be fed more because adults are the ones that participate in labor. As the dire need of nutrition education becomes a reality, she becomes not just a researcher but also a health educator. The community looks up to her for advice on nutrition and other health care issues. Dettwyler's influence becomes apparent when her nutrition advice is incorporated in a local song.
Through the lens of studying malnutrition, Dettwyler is able to shed light to many other health issues. She is exposed to other health issues such as infant mortality, intestinal parasitic infections, gangrene, lack of dental hygiene, pregnancy and death. Her ability to explain and define medical terminology in such a clear way that the reader easily understands is incredible. Her genuine passion for health and anthropology results in a book that will be on the top of many people's list of favorite readings. The reader walks away from the book with the knowledge that language is powerful and that health care issues need to be addressed while taking culture and society into consideration.

It was a fun read! I know it is criticized for not being all facts but it was an easy yet fascinating read. I am a nutrition student and have worked with immigrants, so for me it was good read that came together in a real life account. It was evident that she learned more than just books but that she lived in a different culture. Good thoughts.

From the Back Cover

Snyder's classic survey provides an authoritative and absorbing assessment of Northern achievements, ranging from Bohemian court art under Charles IV in Prague in the 1350s to the open sale of pictures as commodities on Antwerp's art market in the 1560s. In rich detail and with utter clarity, this book tells the stories of the artists and the patrons who created this extraordinary flowering of art.

Now sumptuously illustrated in fill color throughout, this new second edition has been carefully revised and updated by Larry Silver, Professor of Art History at University of Pennsylvania and Henry Luttikhuizen, Professor of Art History at Calvin College. Highlights of this second edition include a reorganization of the chapters around centers of production, expanded coverage of the sixteenth century, including the addition of more sculpture and tapestries, and a stronger focus on the careers of major artists. Silver and Luttikhuizen have placed greater emphasis on the reception of Northern Renaissance Art and consequently the new edition features a much stronger consideration of social function arid cultural context.

Almost 680 illustrations, more than 250 in full color, are each keyed to the text, providing superb visual documentation. The book also includes notes to the text, maps, a timetable of the major artistic; political, religious, and scientific achievements of the period, a genealogy of the house of Valois, and a freshly updated bibliography.

About the Author
Silver is Farquhar Professor of History of Art at the University of Pennsylvania and a former President of the College Art Association. He is the author of a survey text Art in History as well as books, articles, and catalogues on the paintings and prints of Northern Europe from the fifteenth to the seventeenth centuries. His recent work has focused on issues of Jewish painters from Holland and German-speaking lands.

In many respects the text before you is an act of homage, a tribute to how well James Snyder's original text, now two decades old, has held up since it was written. At the same time, however, items and images have been added to introduce students to material that has attracted scholarly attention in the intervening years. A new design and expanded color have enhanced both the value of Snyder's analyses and the results of more recent scholarship. The text has been trimmed in places where Snyder was perhaps over-dependent on a few older scholars (e.g. Fraenger on Bosch, Tolnay on Bruegel), whose views are no longer held to be either essential or well-founded. Where Snyder used his own scholarship and his keen interests, particularly in Netherlandish painting, Dutch painting in particular, his insights remain lasting and fundamental, as valid as ever for today's students.

James Snyder also had his biases, and they sometimes made his book unbalanced. His preoccupation with the chronology of Jan van Eyck has been tempered and his apologetic comparisons of Northern art to the prevailing canon of the Italian Renaissance toned down. Relatively thin sections on Germany have been expanded to restore balance. More attention has also been paid to manuscript traditions in France, Flanders, and Snyder's beloved Holland. His discussion of sculpture and tapestry has been expanded to highlight historical developments in those media. In addition, his treatment of sculpture and prints has been reorganized. Whereas he confined sculpture and prints to their own separate chapters, in this edition they have been unified to unveil the accomplishments of those more versatile artists who worked across media, such as Schongauer (engravings and paintings) and Pacher (sculpture and paintings). Another result of this reunification of parts means that Snyder's own fundamental insights into Dutch printmaking and printed book illustrations can now be seen together with the paintings that he did so much to elucidate.

The revised text has also been arranged according to centers, except for a few chapters that focus on single artists. In fact, Snyder's original idea of starting with Bohemia sets the tone for the future considerations of place that follow, including chapters on regions as well as cities (Ghent, Bruges, Augsburg, and Basel), which form the main topics of organization for the artists and their works.

In editing and revising this text, our hope has been to update (especially in the notes and bibliography) and to clarify the valuable, evergreen textbook of James Snyder from 1985. Attentive comparison will chiefly reveal integration of media within reorganization by centers of art production, while still capturing Snyder's excitement for the period and its artists. We offer it anew to the current generation of students.

In closing, the authors would like to acknowledge the meticulous assistance of their students, Freyda Spira, Rebecca Merz, and David Malda, and the job-like patience of both their venerated teachers and long-suffering family members.

Book was exactly what I need HOWEVER this book is listed as GOOD, VERY GOOD condition. The book I received is in extremely POOR condition. I can deal with slightly stained corners and a ripped page but when I opened the box, my cover was completely separated from the binding. I don't know in what world that would be considered 'good' condition, but not one where I pay over $70 for a book that is literally falling apart. Such a shame that they would sell someone a book in this poor quality and not properly point out what the customer is getting. Awful. Horrible. I want my money back.

The Other Half of the Renaissance
By Doug - Haydn Fan
Books on the Renaissance can be quite confusing to non-specialists. For example, Shakespeare classes in English schools discuss him as a Renaissance writer. Yet art teachers describe his near contemporary, Rubens, as the quintessential Baroque artist!
So exactly what does Northern Renaissance Art cover? Is it an age that can be separated, marked out and surveyed by political or religious activities? And by northern what is meant? Is Switzerland the home of northern art? Can it be made in Italy? And what makes it significant and different from the universally recognized world of Italian Renaissance Art, where the term 'art' is always capitalized?
Well, the truth lies pretty much with all of the above. As Snyder shows, several distinct cultures fall into this very large historical category. If you're buying this book as a student for a class, I can only hope you have more than one semester to give to the material. Northern Renaissance Art covers an enormous time period and many countries. It approaches in diversity the far better known works and ideas of the Italian Renaissance. No one seriously discusses the Italian Renaissance in a single semester - the material is taught in a series of classes. The same limitations and requirements should apply to teaching the Northern Renaissance. Art history today no longer focuses on aesthetic questions of style; as a result a student faces a lifetime's study of a period's culture and history.
However, there are some basics. If one word could define what separates the two worlds of the Italian and Northern Renaissance - that word would have to be naturalism. Northern European artists revel in achievements of realism that far surpass the Italians, who, while perfectly capable of such stylistic work, prefer a more intellectually formalized approach. Indeed, Michelangelo dismissed northern artist's attention to nature and care for photographic details as incidental, and excessively ephemeral, when contrasted to his Italian art which used images for projecting deeper spiritual values. The public, however, was delighted with the landscapes, and their non-abstract openness. Many artists from the north specialized in landscape, and it became a manner so associated with them that it was not uncommon for Italian painters to hire Northern artists to fill in the 'less important' landscape backgrounds of their larger canvases.
The Italian Renaissance differed also in that it was singularly connected to the revival and reappreciation of ancient 'pagan' works of art. These antiquities provided a challenge, as well as a reawakening, for the artists and thinkers of Italy. In the north artists did not have at hand magnificent works of ancient architecture or sculpture: as a result intellectual challenges were quite different; though initially tied to the Italian thinking, the northern artists more and more shifted focus onto their own immediate world. As the fifteenth century closed they became attuned to newer discoveries from the exploration of new (not ancient)worlds by sea, and the individuals emancipation brought about through the beginnings of Protestant thought. For moderns this means that the Northern Renaissance often appears closer to us and our own post photographic record of the world. The artist's sense of intimacy with nature seems little different than what most of us know as landscape art. Their religious works also convey a striking ease with space less contrived than our eyes find the representation of space in most Italian painting of the same era. All made the more attractive for being so accessible. Some of this difference marks profound religious and philosophical differences - northern art has about it some of the fervor of emancipation - there is here a reflection of the Armana naturalism revolting against the old art of a more dogmatic less individualistic Egypt. Eventually Italian artists would adapt to this new naturalism, especially in the north of Italy in Venice, in the works of Bellini, Giorgione, and Titian.
This book introduces the reader to the early Flemish master painters, such as Van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden, the later great German artists, such as Durer and Holbein and Grunewald, and the strange inner universe of Bosch. Topping off the age are the works of one of the grandest of all humanists, Pieter Bruegel the elder. And these are just some of the great painters! There remains a wealth of sculpture and architecture, drawing and craft work. Moreover, the Northern Renaissance is also an artistic universe filled with fresh new theories and a milieu profoundly effected by the great religious upheaval of the Reformation.
Snyder gives as good an overview of so much material as one could hope for - his work replete with an enormous number of images, many of which have for nearly half a millenium been accepted as iconic. The text treats the material with a practised consideration, born of many years study. However; the impetus of the book is to direct the reader further afield, and this is indisputably the author's greatest achievement and the point of such a survey work. The real jewels for readers will be enlarging these discoveries by travel and on site awareness, these efforts made more satisfying through study of specific texts directed at the new artists whose work transforms your view of what the Renaissance was.

A Classic Reference Book
By Marco Antonio Abarca
I think that I am like many people in that my knowledge of the Renaissance Art of Northern Europe comes from a few lectures in a college art history survey course. A few iconic images from the likes of Bosch, Holbein,Durer and Breugel are all that come to mind. I knew the era was important but the details were sketchy.

"Northern Renaissace Art" is everything you could want to deepen your knowledge of this important period of history. The book is 750 pages long and has over 680 illustration of which 250 are in beautifully reproduced color. James Snyder does an excellent job of explaining why those iconic paintings that everyone knows are great and deserve to be remembered 500 years after they were painted. More importantly, Snyder takes those second tier masters out of obscurity and elevates them to their proper place in history. Before reading this book, I had never heard of such masters as Jan Gossaert, Jean Fouquet and Petrus Christus. It was a exciting to get know their work. By no means is "Northern Rensaissace Art" a reasonably priced book. But it is the type of book that will give you great pleasure for many years.

James Cameron: An Unauthorized Biography Of The Filmmaker (Renaissance Books Director), by Marc Shaprio

As told by veteran entertainment journalist Marc Shapiro, the story of James Cameron is rich in history and as explosively entertaining as any of his masterpiece films. Cameron the youngster built toy rockets and submarines and displayed at an early age the drive to win at any cost. The Cameron legend has it that when a neighbor stole some of little Jim's toys, he sneaked into the boy's backyard and sawed through the branches supporting his treehouse. When the treehouse collapsed, Cameron's rival ended up in the hospital.

Ever since that day, James Cameron has been leaving many of those who cross his path in a state of mental or physical disrepair. But his fanaticism and incredibly strong work ethic also win the respect of those around him, and inspire many to go the extra mile. The teenager who was awestruck by the visual power and special effects of Stanley Kubrick's groundbreaking 2001: A Space Odyssey and immediately decided to become a filmmaker, has grown up to be one of the very best.

But at what cost? Those who would label Cameron a self-absorbed , egotistical maniac have plenty of ammunition to back up their claims. As early as 1984's The Terminator, cast and crew members took to wearing T-shirts with the slogan "You can't scare me...I work for James Cameron." Of course, the infamous director never really talks to co-workers on his sets, he barks at them in succinct soundbites. And he doesn't play favorites. Not even his franchise player, Arnold Schwarzenegger, got special treatment during the filming of True Lies. High on a crane and ready to film a scene, he reports: "I had to go to the bathroom read bad. Jim screams up to me, 'No you can't! You're a military man on a mission, would a real pilot land just to go to the bathroom?'"

James Cameron: An Unauthorized Biography of the Filmmaker includes other revelations and insights:

* how the idea for The Terminator came to him in a fever dream
* how he fell overboard in love with actress Suzy Amis on the set of Titanic
* how Cameron's antics drove several stars of The Abyss to near nervous breakdowns
* how someone on the set of Titanic allegedly attempted to incapacitate the lovable director by slipping him, and the rest of the crew, the drug PCP

EGO MANIAC ON THE LOOSE
By A Customer
I REALLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK ABOUT ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL DIRECTORS OF LAST 2 DECADES. JAMES CAMERSON IS AN EGO MANIAC, PERFECTIONIST, WORKAHOLIC,SLAVE DRIVER. HE IS SELF CENTERED AND AROGANT. HE HAS HAD 4 MARRIAGES AND FAILED IN EACH. HE ALSO IS A TALENTED, SELF MOTIVATED, INTELLIGENT, AND CREATIVE PERSON. HE SEEMS TO STRIVE ON STRESS, PRESSURE, AND CHAOS. THIS BOOK CONTAINS MANY INTERESTING AND AMUSING TALES OF HIS DARK SIDE (MIJ). THE TELLING OF HIM GOING DOWN IN A MINI SUB TO DO SOME FILMING OF THE WRECKAGE OF THE TITANIC HIMSELF IS IN ITSELF A GREAT STORY. THIS IS A MUST FOR ANYONE WHO LIKES TO READ ABOUT BEHIND THE SCENES ABOUT MOVIE MAKING AND LIKES TO READ ABOUT GOSSIP CONCERNING SO CALLED HOLLYWOOD STARS. THE AUTHOR HAS A REALLY GOOD READ HERE.
VERY RECOMMENDED.

If you like this director, overall, well worth a read
By Dan Short
I picked up this book over the week-end, and finished it in a day. Being "unauthorized" it is actually a very well put together piece of work. The author has obviously used alot of reference material (he quotes Starlog alot) but reinforces this material with his own cast and crew interviews.
Unfortunately the sections on the films that preceed "The Abyss" are relatively light reads. The section on "Aliens" does however bring in some very interesting details about the production that I have never seen in print before...it does not however go quite far enough, I put it down wanting to know more.
Overall 3 out of 5...this book could have done more with the earlier period of this directors career.

A very interesting book to read.
By Michael J Woznicki
Over my life the "unauthorized" biographies are usually books with sorted details of sex, drugs and other scandals. Those books are usually a real turnoff for me. However, Marc Shapiro has written a book that I found both fascinating and enlightening at the same time.
What Shapiro gives you is an inside look at the Filmmaker who is responsible for films like Titanic, The Terminator, True Lies and Terminator 2. Read and learn how Cameron got his start working for another film genius, Roger Corman.
While this book leaves you to ponder the question of whether or not Cameron was the power hungry, controlling and manipulating filmmaker some have claimed or is Cameron just another Hollywood Movie flake or possibly the film industry's greatest genius.
The quick and interesting read makes this book a real pleasure. If you like to read about how the movie industry moves and shakes than this book is one you'll want to add to your collection. Overall an excellent job and well worth the time to read!

On Film-making: An Introduction to the Craft of the Director, by Alexander Mackendrick

A priceless examination of the filmmaker's craft, from the renowned director of Sweet Smell of Success

After more than twenty years in the film industry as a screenwriter, storyboard editor, and director of memorable films such as The Ladykillers, Alexander Mackendrick turned his back on Hollywood and began a new career as the Dean of one of the country's most demanding and influential film schools. His absolute devotion to the craft of filmmaking served as a powerful impetus to students at the California Institute for the Arts for almost twenty five years, with a teaching style that included prodigious notes, neatly crafted storyboards, and handouts containing excerpts of works by Kierkegaard, Aristotle, and others. At the core of Mackendrick's lessons lay a deceptively simple goal: to teach aspiring filmmakers how to structure and write the stories they want to tell, while using the devices particular to the medium of film to tell their stories effectively.

In this impressive volume, edited by Paul Cronin, the myriad materials that made Mackendrick's reputation as an instructor are collected for the first time, offering a chance for professionals as well as students to discover a methodology of filmmaking that is challenging yet refreshing in its clarity. Meticulously illustrated and drawing on examples from such classic films as North by Northwest, Citizen Kane, and Touch of Evil, Mackendrick's elegant lessons are sure to provide inspiration for a new generation of filmmakers.

How To Make Movies, Good Movies
By Rob Hardy
Shaw said, "Those who can, do; those who can't, teach." In a strange way, Alexander Mackendrick fits both sides of that dictum. "Sandy" Mackendrick was an accomplished film director. After having worked in advertising, he started making films for the British Government during World War II. After the war he wrote scripts and he began directing. For the Ealing Studios, he made _Whiskey Galore!_, _The Man in the White Suit_, and _The Ladykillers_. Then he came to Hollywood, where he made the wonderfully biting _Sweet Smell of Success_. He could direct fine movies, and he did; but then he slipped into the "can't do" category, not for any lack of talent, but because he was not much of a deal-maker, and resented having to negotiate details with the studios. He started teaching, becoming dean of the film school at the California Institute of the Arts in 1969. He continued teaching until his death in 1993, but now filmmakers and audiences can get a glimpse of what he taught, in _On Film-making: An Introduction to the Craft of the Director_ (Faber and Faber). It is a sampling of his lecture handouts, some illustrated by his own sketches, that he delivered to students over the years, and shows the richness of his thinking on the surprising complexities of artistic decisions regarding even simple shoots on tiny films. Those who enjoy movies, but don't know much about how they are made, will be astonished at how many details of technique the director has to consider before anyone yells "Action!" Those who make movies, or want to, could not do better than to study what Mackendrick has to say.

Mackendrick emphatically agrees with Truffaut, who in his interview book with Hitchcock wrote, "Whatever is _said_ instead of being _shown_ is lost on the viewer." (One of Mackendrick's many slogans: "Movies SHOW... and then TELL.") Always, regard to the audience is paramount: "Try to tell the story while always remembering that the audience has somewhere better to go and something better to do." Like a good storyteller, use curiosity, expectation, and suspense to keep them buttonholed. The reader of this book will want to be familiar with certain films to which Mackendrick returns again and again, like _The Third Man_ or _On the Waterfront_, but not all the cinema is fine cinema. In a chapter titled "Plausibility and Willing Suspension of Disbelief," he discusses the sci-fi film _Them!_ which he says is a "piece of nonsense" but shows solid, simple plot mechanisms, and follows the rule that "we are allowed only one major Incredible Thing" (Giant ants are invading!) while "everything else in the story should actually be logical, even over-logical." There is rich advice about dealing with actors. A student who asked, "How does a director get an actor to do what he wants?" took Mackendrick off guard, as he had never asked the question in those terms. It's the wrong question. "You don't," came the eventual answer, "You try to get the actor to want what you need."

Mackendrick knows you can't teach the art and inspiration that directors have to have intuitively, though there is a useful chapter titled "A Technique for Having Ideas." The craft involved in direction, though, has a possibility of being taught, and he has here covered the craft from scriptwriting through editing. I only sit in audiences for films (and the intimidating muster of factors Mackendrick brings up that the director must consider tells me I am in the right spot in front of the screen, not behind the camera), but I have a much better appreciation for what a director does after reading these fine instructions. I also wish that every director now working would simply follow these rules. The principles here, if followed universally, would benefit directors, audiences, and the quality of Hollywood's output, not to mention its bottom line.

One of the very best books on filmmaking
By Nathan Jongewaard
I have read many books on filmmaking and I have a film school degree (from CalArts, as it happens, where Mackendrick once taught). You can't learn filmmaking from a book or from school, only by making films. Nevertheless, "On Film-making" comes as close as any book I've ever found to explaining precisely and beautifully the work of a film director. Whether you want to make films or are simply a film fan, this book will be an immensely rewarding and illuminating experience.

A great book for writers, not just directors
By The Doogster
I've got over fifty books dealing with all types of writing (screen, novels, TV), and this is one of only a handful I consider truly essential. The first half of the book examines screenplays. Most books on filmmaking give only a cursory glance at the screenplay, but we writers know that the screenplay is the most important part of the film, don't we!

Mackendrick is one of an elite group of filmmakers who excelled in both screenwriting and directing. His insights are profound. His "writer's wall" quotes are equal to the entire content of many other books on screenwriting.

Mackendrick is basically the bridge between classical and modern cinematic writing. He emphasises that what is going to happen NEXT, as opposed to what is happening NOW, is the core of good storytelling. He also teaches that the preparatory period before a significant event AND the after effects of that event are equally or more dramatically significant than the actual event itself (as demonstrated by a movie like Reservoir Dogs). Mackendrick's book is one of the few which covers such advanced concepts as negative action, activity versus action, and plot density. The only area I don't agree with him is his dislike of flashbacks (although he has valid reasons).

I judge a book by how many notes I take when reading it. I took a lot of notes when reading this one. Now go and buy it!
