En bonne forme is a fully integrated Intermediate French program, based on the conviction that a solid knowledge of French grammar is essential for solid acquisition of the language. Although the core of each chapter is the grammar section, students are given ample opportunity throughout to improve all four skills--reading, writing, listening, and speaking. All of the grammar explanations and exercise directions are given in French to encourage greater acquisition of the language. Reading selections, carefully chosen to illustrate the grammar structures presented in each chapter, are immediately reinforced with exercises.

About the Author
Simone Renaud was born in France, raised in Morocco (North Africa), and studied for seven years in the Sorbonne where her degrees (Licence de lettres classiques, CAPES de Lettres Modernes, Diplome de professeur de franAais A l'A(c)tranger) prepared her for teaching French abroad. Her teaching experience includes teaching French in Geneva (Switzerland) for Smith College and teaching all levels, from beginners to Master Degree classes and assistants programs, at the University of Oregon in Eugene and at San Jose State University. She created and ran for many years the Alliance FranAaise of Santa Cruz, CA, where she is retired. In addition, Professor Renaud has authored many successful French textbooks.

Dr. Dominique van Hooff is a French native who specialized in French modern literature both in France and in the US. She currently chairs the Foreign Language Department at San Jose State University. She has taught all levels of classes in French from elementary to graduate at several universities. An active and well-known scholar in her field, she has authored many articles and books (3 textbooks) and has made numerous presentations both on scholarly literary subjects and methods of teaching French throughout the world. Professor van Hooff served as President of the AATF for Northern California for 9 years. She is a Knight in the order of the French Academic Palms.

Excellent French grammar

My semi-private class of three students and our wonderful teacher have been working through this book for about a year and I find it extremely comprehensive, although sometimes I gloss over the minutia thinking I'll never have to use that. So far I can't think of a single point of French grammar that is overlooked. It's written in French too. Best for someone who has already learned some of the basics.

About the Author

Jane Hunter is a postdoctoral researcher in STEM education at the University of Technology Sydney, Australia. Prior to her appointment to UTS in early February 2016, she taught in teacher education at Western Sydney University and the University of Sydney and in many K-12 schools; more recently, she worked as a senior education officer in various technology, professional teaching standards, and curriculum projects in the NSW Department of Education.

Using HPC to transform classroom practice

Clearly and concisely presented the High Possibility Classrooms (HPC) model, which arises from Hunter’s observation of four teachers' classroom practice, captures and documents innovative practice that has pedagogy at its heart. What I find interesting is that the HPC model for technology integration diverges from traditional views of ICT integration. Hunter's model is theory-driven technology practice focusing on purposeful planning and teaching, enriched subject matter and thinking and creating that stimulates authentic student engagement. For classroom practitioners, HPC provides instruction for teachers on how to use for example simple pedagogical techniques that make the learning intentions explicit, contribute to students’ enriched knowledge of the subject matter and builds opportunities for creativity and reflection. The chapter on Creating high possibility classrooms is of particular interest as it outlines how the finer detail of HPC can transform into “practice in action” to create motivating and engaging learning spaces and contexts.

This practical, user-friendly book is a must-read for all teachers. Dr Hunter examines the classroom practices of four exemplary teachers. Gina, Gabby, Nina and Kitty are inspiring in their use of technology and in their creativity. In each case study, technology is used to boost student voice, student ownership and self-regulation of learning. The book is packed with new ideas for experienced and less experienced teachers on integrating technology and enhancing creativity in the classroom. It has challenged me to question my practice and reassess my role in the classroom. Gina says, “My students work in a learning community to build meaning of the world out of the learning experiences they engage in. They are on task, they are in task and they are learning for a purpose.” It was interesting and motivating to read how these teachers foster an exciting ‘learning community’ using technology. The HPC conceptions will be a valuable ‘tool’ for guiding my classroom planning and practice from now on.

Excellent resource for ICT integration into the classroom

I purchased this book a few weeks ago as I am doing a Masters Degree in ICT in Education and seriously implementing ICT into the classroom. This is an excellent resource for a teachers professional library and presents many strategies in how to implement and integrate ICT into classroom teaching. This book is backed by extensive research into what works and includes a strong foundation of educational theory yet at the same time is easy to read and practical in its approach. The model of 'TPACK' with the added layer of 'High Possibility Classrooms' (HPC) means that the teacher following these structures will implement ICT integration far more efficiently and effectively. I highly recommend this book as being top of the list of purchases for anyone who is serious in integrating ICT into their classroom.

The previous editions of what is affectionately known as the Mouse Manual became and remain the definitive reference sources on this subject. The current authors have taken the mantle of authorship from Brigid Hogan, Rosa Beddington, Frank Costantini, and Elizabeth Lacy and have extensively reorganized and rewritten the new edition. It contains 267 more pages than the second edition, which is largely reflective of the significant advances that have occurred since 1994. This book is essential to any group working with mice. It covers all aspects from designing of targeting vectors and transgenes, embryonic stem cell culture and embryo manipulation and analysis. Very detailed methods as well as background information make this a great training manual for students, technicians and postdoctoral fellows.

The New Testament?

A definitive summary of mouse development and simple, concise proven protocols. This is the best publication there is for this kind of work. It's much better than the 2nd, ed. I wish it had more of a troubleshooting focus, but I guess if you are in this line of work, you should be able to figure out problems yourself, or query the tg list.... I like how there are alternative strategies mentioned depending on how your lab is equiped (or not).

About the Author
Reginald G. Golledge, Ph.D., is Professor of Geography at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His interests include spatial cognition, the acquisition and use of spatial knowledge across the life-span, cognitive mapping, individual decision-making, household activity patterns, and gender issues in spatial cognition. Legally blind, some of his current research includes: comparison of spatial abilities of blind and sighted persons; development of a Personal Guidance System (PGS) for blind travelers; disposable tactual strip maps for blind travelers; evaluation of auditory/tactual information systems as travel planning aids; and travel needs of the non-driving disabled.

Robert J. Stimson, Ph.D., is Professor of Urban Studies at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia. He is also a Director of the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute and responsible for the operation of its Queensland office. Educated in geography at the University of New England and later taking his doctorate at the Flinders University of South Australia, Stimson is recognised as one of the leading urban researchers in Australia. He has published widely in social, economic and behavioral aspects of urban development in Australia, and more recently has worked on aspects of the internationalization of the Australian space economy and the growth of mega city regions in the Pacific Rim region. Stimson has longstanding multidisciplinary interests including the application of survey research methods in the investigation of spatial behaviour and the role of institutions in public policy and urban development and planning. His previous appointments include Dean of the Faculty of Management at the University of Canberra, Director of the Australian Institute of Urban Studies, and as a geographer in the School of Social Sciences at the Flinders University, South Australia, where he was also Director of the Centre for Applied Social and Survey Research.

Patricia Leavy, PhD, is an independent sociologist and former Chair of Sociology and Criminology and Founding Director of Gender Studies at Stonehill College in Easton, Massachusetts. I used this book in a doctoral level course on critical autoethnography. The students loved the book! We discussed it in depth, and several students were inspired to use various arts-based methods in their final papers for the class. They intend to use these methods as they proceed with their dissertation research. They were captivated as the possibilities for presenting research findings in creative and interesting formats that allow them to write compelling accounts of working with marginalized communities. One of the students, Rebecca, said that the book gives her hope for being able to write "meaningful pieces that reach beyond the academy." Leavy's book presents the perfect blending of the arts and the sciences. Bravo, Patricia!

Finally a Methodological Discussion capturing the fluidity of the actual worlds we study

I think a colleague I was talking about this book with most appropriately put into words how I feel about this work from Dr. Leavy - "Where has this book been all my life" my colleague exclaimed, and that is exactly how I feel.
For many researchers, teachers, and public academics, methods represent an ongoing, often tense, conversation within and between fields throughout the arts and sciences. Rather than the binary distinction between arts and science preached by old school positivism and academics wedded to abstract notions of this or that type of knowledge as better or worse, more or less valid, and / or more or less useful in educating and speaking to broader public audiences, however, this book outlines (with citations and examples for use when encountering old school positivists and others obsessed with artificial boundaries) many ways artistic science and scientific arts can work in tandem with one another to both make information and knowledge more useful and accessible to broader audiences, and to capture the many aspects of the physical, social, and aesthetic world that do not fit so neatly into this or that arbitrary model. For anyone seeking to do arts-based-science or science-based-arts or both, this is a MUST READ, and a powerful example of some of the ways fluid approaches to knowledge, information, and education may go much farther than the hierarchical, binary obsessions of the past!
