Errors in grammar and content

I just read the very first article in this book (page 4, last paragraph). It refers to "mon femme". This word is not masculine. Oops!

Tried again. Second choice was the article on "Francophonie canadienne" (p. 18, paragraph 1) where it refers to "les provinces du Nord qui sont encore appelées les 'provinces maritimes' du Canada". The Maritime provinces are not the northern provinces of Canada (I am Canadian).

I only read two articles and they both had errors. I don't trust this book as a source of French that should be learned or taught.

Great idea for a book, but the editors of "Think French" magazine who created this book need to do a bit more work. These kinds of errors shouldn't get past editors at all, but it's especially bad in a book intended for students who want language samples to copy and learn from.

Good news and Bad news

The good news about this book is that includes over 90 very good written subjects in different aspects of french culture, the bad news is that only 26 of those 90 subjects have a an audio track !! it would have been great to have 90 tracks covering different pronunciation difficulties, i guess the authors ran out of space on their hard drive !!!

At last!

At last, a combination french reader with an audio to follow along. Of all the audio-reader combos I've tried, this is the best. The way this is set up, the reader is forced to think in french since the accompanying word lists are not intrusive. Following the recommendations given in the instructions, I found that my comprehension of spoken french has increased considerably. I wish I had this when I was studying french in school.

A view in the everiday lifes of ancient times

The new book by Katherine Dunbabin is a welcome addition to the already excellent catalogue of Cambridge Press. Ms. Dunbabin once more proves her value as a historian by showing that the study of Art in ancient times goes beyond aesthetics and the sphere of nobles and palaces. Her work on Section II "Technique and Production" brings to life the craftsmen and workshops that made the mosaics, but also the social relationships involved in the creation of all forms of Art. Another strong point of the book is the quality of the images depicted in it, both the photo reproductions and the graphic drawings of the mosaics are astounding. The variety of subjects shown in the mosaics allow the modern reader to have a pretty good idea of the ambiance and way of life of the times. It is also interesting that at the end of each chapter Ms. Dunbabin indicates a list of related bibliography with recent works. I can only be sorry that her own classical work "The Mosaics of Roman North Africa" is out of print. This pioneer work should be reprinted.

My Vacation Pictures of Rome

All thru Italy I took pictures of the floors, I hope to make them into quilts. This book is an excellent reference, I could have bought it first and looked at the other sites while I was on vacation.

Great History but a major disappointment regarding images

I purchased this book to gain color references for the mosaics.....unfortunately, the majority of this book contains black and white plates. If you are planning on using this book as a reference for color, forget it.

About the Author
W. Bruce Allen (Ph.D., Economics, Northwestern University) is Professor of Business and Public Policy at the Wharton School of Business, the University of Pennsylvania. For many years he was the Vice Dean and Director of the Wharton Graduate Division. He is an internationally recognized expert in transportation economics, and he specializes in demand theory and logistics. In addition to his duties at Wharton, Professor Allen teaches each summer in India and consults for numerous companies domestically and abroad. He has won a number of teaching awards, including the coveted Anvil Award, the highest teaching honor at Wharton since it is voted on by the students.

Keith Weigelt (Ph.D., Economics, Northwestern University) is the Rebecca and Morris Marks Professor of Management at the Wharton School of Business, the University of Pennsylvania. He is an internationally recognized expert in business strategy, game theory, and tournaments, with articles published in the following leading journals: Journal of Political Economy, Econometrica, American Economic Review, Quarterly Journal of Economics, Journal of Business, and Management Science. Professor Weigelt has won numerous teaching awards, most recently the Undergraduate Division Excellence in Teaching Award and the “Tough, but I will thank you in 5 years” Award.

Neil A. Doherty (Ph.D. Cranfield Institute) is the Frederick H. Ecker Professor of Insurance and Risk Management at the Wharton School of Business, the University of Pennsylvania. He is an internationally recognized expert in corporate risk management, and is the author of Integrated Risk Management (McGraw-Hill, 2000). Professor Doherty has also won numerous teaching awards.

The late Edwin Mansfield was for many years a distinguished professor of economics at the University of Pennsylvania. He was an internationally recognized expert in the economics of technology and industrial organization. His numerous texts, all published by W.W. Norton, have sold millions of copies around the world. In 1979, when Sino-American scientific agreements were finally reached, Mansfield was the first American economist to lecture in the People's Republic of China.

Too wordy, not enough depth

First I will admit to not reading the entire book, just the chapters required for a managerial economics class I was taking.

That aside this is one of the least informative books I've used in my academic or professional career. The main issues I have with the book is it is a very topical read (i.e. pointlessly wordy) with very little depth and like a lot of academic reads it really does not focus on application. (You'd think a book with Managerial in the title would focus 80% of its effort on application.)
The end result is a book that seems to make fairly simple topics sound complex and difficult while minimizing the complexity of more difficult subjects all the while not helping to improve your ability to make economic managerial decisions.

Never use this book

Truly one of the worst textbooks I have ever had to deal with. Nothing is explained clearly and the problems at the end of the chapters do not reflect the information in the chapter. They use *for lack of a better word* stupid phrases throughout the book (ex. Enough chat; let's get serious) that distract from the already bad explanations.

Worst econ book ever

So, my minor is in economics, so I'm pretty well versed in econ. In grad school, Managerial Econ was one of my requirements so I thought it would be pretty easy, until I got this book. The questions, examples, and the writing - none of it makes sense to me. This is THE worst econ book I've ever seen. WORST. Hands. Down.

Fantastic and fun to play

Songbooks are usually a flip of the coin in terms of how good they are and what you are looking for. Sometimes, you'll get books that incorporate the singing melody in the piano part, while also trying as best as possible to keep the background music going, to create a solo piano piece. Others are simply the piano part, complete with spaces and other instrumental breaks for the other band members. Others still try to make a complete piece that, while not including the vocal melody in the piano part, you can play from beginning to end. This piano songbook tries to do the latter and, for the most part, it's one of the best piano books I've played for rock music.

Honestly, Muse is probably one of the best bands to pick for a pianist, simply because most of the bombastic music incorporates pianos to some degree. This songbook collects some of the better songs from a piano-playing perspective from every album up to Resistance. There are some amazing songs here and most of them are incredibly fun to play. This songbook incorporates the background music and leaves the vocal melody to the vocal line. So if you're looking for a piano book that incorporates the vocal melody in with the piano part, look elsewhere. The music is an accompaniment piece. While this is sometimes a negative for me, since I just want to jam out to some songs as a complete piece, for the most part the background music here is so fascinating and fun to play that it doesn't matter. Some songs contained here are absolutely fantastic to play on the piano. The entire Exogenesis: Symphony is included and is quite simply the reason to buy the book. It is written to the score, note-for-note keyboard transcriptions mixed with other instruments to be a complete symphonic piece you can play on the piano. It also includes the vocal line, too. But even without the vocal part being included in the piano melody, it still sounds and plays fantastic. Ditto "United States of Eurasia (+ Collateral Damage)." While you'll never play the vocal part, the background piano melody is fun and gets pretty complicated, with lots of arpeggios and octaves, with some odd and sometimes tricky rhythms for the bass notes. It's a great song that builds wonderfully to the end (i.e. Eura-SIA! SIA! SIA!) and sounds fantastic. And then, of course, the segue into "+ Collateral Damage," which is a condensed version of Chopin's Nocturne in E Flat Major and is a beautiful coda to a loud/bombastic song. This is the song I'm currently learning and it's provided me hours of entertainment as I work through it.

Other songs don't fare as well. I was excited to have "Apocalypse Please" because of its bombastic opening. But the piano part is literally that same bombastic chord structure for about half of the song. Fun to play and bang out on the piano, but not when you're playing it, without change, for the first two/three pages. It's a song that's better suited to have the piano as an accompaniment part, as opposed to a solo to play. I'm sure a band that wanted to play the song would get more use out of this particular arrangement than the solo pianist. This also goes for other songs, like "Feeling Good." Fantastic song and if you plan on using the book as an accompaniment piece for a singer, it's great. But as a piano solo it's not so fun simply because it repeats the same chord progression and notes for most of the song. Again, note-for-not transcriptions and is exactly as Matt Bellamy plays it.

Overall, The Muse Songbook does a great job of picking songs that sound great and feature the piano. Everything from "Butterflies & Hurricanes" to the Exogenesis: Symphony is showcased. It's not about their most popular songs or singles or anything (notice the lack of "Supermassive Black Hole," "Time is Running Out," "Knights of Cydonia," etc.), it's about songs that feature piano and could be turned into a complete song. It's a fantastic songbook that truly features the awesome piano parts that go into creating a Muse song and really helps showcase just how rhythmic and complicated their music is. I would definitely recommend this for any Muse pianist aficionado. Just know that you aren't getting a book of piano solos, per se, and that the book is written note-for-note for a lot of it. As such, it's definitely intermediate or higher.

Muse songs as they were intended to be played by Matt Bellamy

I don't like most piano songbooks because they usually incorporate the voice melody to make a whole piano solo piece. I was looking for proper sheet music of Muse for various reasons:

1.-To make sure I had figured out correctly by ear the easier songs of their repertoire.
2.-To learn to play the more complicated ones accurately.
3.-To be able to play the songs' piano parts while singing at the same time.

And all 3 of my purposes were satisfied by this songbook. I discovered I've been playing Sunburn correctly, as well as some fragments of other songs I had also learned by ear, like Apocalypse Please, I Belong to You, Space Dementia or Butterflies & Hurricanes. Complicated songs like Butterflies & Hurricanes, the complete Exogenesis, the ending of Neutron Star Collision or the mid-section of I Belong to You are accurately transcribed in this songbook. And the best part, in my opinion, is that none of the songs incorporate the voice melody in the piano part; it was included on a separate staff though, which comes in handy if you also want to sing while playing (which is my case).

Still I noticed some aspects which I didn't like quite much. Some songs incorporate elements which are played by the bass. The little bass part at the beginning of United States of Eurasia comes to mind. It appears on the bass clef to be played by the left hand, but it can easily be ignored if you want to play the song as it is on the album, so that's not much of a problem.

What I was most disappointed about was the selection of songs. Some of the songs included are piano adaptations of guitar or synth based songs, like Blackout, Invincible, Soldier's Poem, Starlight, or Take A Bow. It is nice and fun to play them on piano, but that was not what I was looking for. I would have preferred it if some other songs which actually are piano based or at least have some actual piano or keyboard parts in them had been included instead of them, like Megalomania, Unnatural Selection, Cave, or the rare B-side Piano Thing. Maybe they could update it now and include Survival, Animals, Explorers and Isolated System from The 2nd Law.

But despite this little detail, I loved it and it is well worth it just because of all the great songs that it does include and are accurately transcribed.

An introduction explains that governments believed Native people were ignorant and made laws to educate their children. Shi-shi-etko counts down her last four days before going away. She tries to memorize everything about her home–tall grass swaying to the rhythm of the breeze, determined mosquitoes, working bumblebees. There is a family party to say good-bye. Her father takes her out in a canoe and implores her to remember the trees, the water, and the mountains, and her grandmother gives her a small bag made of deer hide in which to keep her memories. The vivid, digital illustrations rely on a red palette, evoking not only the land but also the sorrow of the situation and the hope upon which the story ultimately ends. This contemplative narrative will help children see how Native people have been treated in both Canada and the United States. Gr. 2-4. Using gentle rounded shapes and rich autumnal colors, LaFave captures the events that take place during the three days before a young Canadian girl must leave her home. Author Campbell's foreword explains the harsh government policies that, until 1984, separated Native American children as young as four from their parents, though her story conveys only that Shi-shi-etko, whose name means "she loves to play in the water," is going away to school. Before she leaves, the girl visits the creek with her mother, goes canoeing with her father, and collects sprigs from trees with her grandmother. The loving adults urge her to treasure these memories, and the girl looks and listens carefully. Without dwelling on the impending separation, the lyrical text is, nevertheless, poignant, as is the last picture of children in the back of a pickup truck driving away. Although Shi-shi-etko appears to be about five or six, the audience for her story will be slightly older children, who can grasp the implications of her fate and understand that the story takes place in the past. Talk about a picture book to tear at my heart strings and boil my blood. This story is so heart wrenching and maddening at the same time as being so beautiful in tradition until the horrible new white man made tradition of sending Native American children off to residential schools to unlearn their native ways.

My heart broke at each new day for Shi-shi-etko and her family.

Beautiful story, and appropriate for even younger children

I got this book to introduce my little one to the injustices visited upon the First Nations people, but also to share some of the beauty of that culture. It is beautifully written, and completely appropriate for kids as young as six, I would say.

Why did I write this book? It's part of my mission to revolutionize eating and feeding. But like any worthwhile project I have ever done, I backed into it. I thought I had a clear direction but what I hadn't anticipated is that, like a spirited child, Secrets has been a most willful book! In response to reader request, I started out to write a short and simple primer about child feeding following my golden rule, the division of responsibility in feeding: The parent is responsible for the what, when and where of feeding, the child is responsible for the how much and whether of eating. The problem that soon became apparent is that the cornerstone of that division of responsibility is family meals, and today's families have extraordinary difficulty getting meals on the table. It's not for lack of commitment or trying. There are too many barriers: lack of time and food skills, guilt and anxiety about eating and, not the least, all the rules that have taken the fun out of eating. We all absolutely depend on knowing we are going to be fed. To do well with eating, we have to have meals. We must make meals a priority or we will scare ourselves and our children, whether we know it or not. We'll grab at not-so-good food, and end up feeling hungry and unsatisfied, both emotionally and physically.

About the Author
I was born and raised on a farm in South Dakota and moved to Wisconsin to do an internship in dietetics after I graduated from SD State University in Brookings. I have remained here since, marrying and raising three now-grown children: a girl and two boys. My daughter is married and has three daughters. After earning a masters in nutrition at the University of Wisconsin in Madison I practiced as an outpatient dietitian at a large medical practice. I wrote my first book about child nutrition, Child of Mine; Feeding with Love and Good Sense on the cusp of my transition to becoming a mental health professional. It was intended as a farewell gift to my own sweet and wonderful experiences with raising my children and my clinical practice as a dietitian in pediatrics.

To my surprise, I have become an authority on child nutrition and feeding and have gone on to consult, teach, train, write magazine and journal articles and write books two and three: How to Get Your Kid to Eat...But Not Too Much and Secrets of Feeding a Healthy Family. I keep trying to find time to write about adults and their eating, something more about children seems to come up and claim my attention. Children have a way of doing that! In my 35 years of practice I have developed a uniquely freeing and effective approach to helping adults with their eating. That book may be called something like Secrets of Being a Healthy Eater, but the title smacks of tofu and virtue. My son-in-law suggested Celebrate the Cookie, which has a nice ring to it but implies a cookie cookbook. I have nothing against cookie cookbooks, but I don't plan to write one. The current title attempt is Eating Joyfully in a Food-Crazed World. Suggestions are welcome.

In these times of book-world upheaval, my solution to being an economically solventor perhaps survivingauthor has been to diversify. Along with my writing and training endeavors and after getting a second masters in clinical social work, for the last 20 years I have been in private practice as a psychotherapist specializing in eating disorders. Ten years ago I established Ellyn Satter Associates with the mission of providing resources about eating and feedingbooks, teaching materials, training materials and trainingfor the public and for professionals.

As a RD, I'm really impressed with Satter's insight and guidelines...she's inspiring and has undoubtedly changed my clinical approach to both weight management and individual/family nutrition and wellness. Highly recommend this book to anyone hoping to improve their own relationship with food or for those who are assisting others in their quest for better nutrition!

Ellyn Satter understands kids, parents and the pressures of modern life, and shows us how to navigate our way to a healthier diet! No guilt here, either. Just common sense and good advice.

I really wanted to like this book

I wanted to like this book. Satter has been recommended by people who share my beliefs about child development and child rearing--ie. honoring autonomy, encouraging self regulation, authoritative not authoritarian parent-child relationship. However, the info on nutrition and food is so disappointingly poor and inaccurate. The menus, recipes, cooking info, nutrition advice come out of the 70s-- canned mushroom soup? bread and butter with every dinner? meal patterns based on fats, carbs and proteins? Margerine? Sugar is not harmful to the body? Instant Ramen? A hamburger, bun and fries are a decent meal?
I kept looking at the publish date to make sure this book wasn't written in 1977. It was actually in 2008.

About the Author

Robert E. Owens, Jr. Ph.D. (“Dr. Bob”) is an Associate Professor at the College of St. Rose in Albany, NY and a New York State Distinguished Teaching Professor. He teaches courses in language development and language disorders and is the author of Language Development, An Introduction (8 editions), Language Disorders, A Functional Approach (6 editions), Program for the Acquisition of Language with the Severely Impaired (PALS), Help Your Baby Talk, Introducing the New Shared Communication Method, and Queer Kids, The Challenge & Promise for Lesbian, Gay & Bisexual Youth. His Language Development text is the most widely used in the world and has been translated into Spanish, Korean, and Arabic. He has also co-authored Introduction to Communication Disorders, A Life Span Perspective (4 editions), written a score of book chapters and professional articles, and authored two as-yet unpublished novels which are sure to win a posthumous Pulitzer prize. Kimberly A. Farinella, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is a Clinical Associate Professor and Clinic Director at Northern Arizona University, and holds a research appointment at the University of Arizona. She completed her post-doctoral fellowship in the Division of Speech Pathology, Department of Neurology at the Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN) and her doctoral training at the University of Arizona. Dr. Farinella’s research focuses on the treatment efficacy of motor-based speech approaches used to treat children with speech disorders of neurogenic origin (i.e., childhood apraxia of speech; dysarthria), as well as systematic study of the principles of motor learning. Dr.

Farinella teaches graduate courses in neurobiology and motor speech disorders, and has presented hundreds of workshops on the differential diagnosis and treatment of children with severe speech sound impairments. She also continues to practice as a school-based speech-language pathologist on a part-time basis throughout the state of Arizona.

I am extremely disappointed in the number of errors that the editor missed

First, this is an incredibly expensive textbook. Having said that, I am extremely disappointed in the number of errors that the editor missed. This text is difficult to read because the authors use acronyms throughout the book, some of which they created themselves. Unless you have an incredible memory you will find yourself going back to figure out what the authors are referring to.

I purchased this book for my daughter who needed it rushed to her for her college course. It came to her very quickly over a holiday weekend. This book was in the college's bookstore but at a much more expensive price. Being a parent of a college student, cutting costs is very important to me and getting a discount on books is Awesome!!!
