Will Require Patience and Faith

I should think a lot of people will think this book is nuts. Good, it's not for you, move on - you aren't ready for this. However, this unapologetic workbook contains some real gems on life, and if it is taken in socio-historical context as a work coming out of Chilean magic practice, the Tarot, and Surrealism, you can begin to see a lot of truth in the ideas. I tried out a couple of the exercises and was amazed that indeed, they worked. Towards the back of the book, the most interesting ideas start to flourish, and if you can get through the intricate and sometimes repetitive work pages, you will be rewarded. A keeper for life insights from a true genius.

So great! So weird and wonderful but the first ten pages alone are worth it. He has a wonderfully practical way of being very blunt yet optimistic. Most of the book is just different scenarios/problems and a couple "recipes" on how to solve them.

It's a song. It's a story. Whether you sing it or read it, the kids love it. Pictures are vibrant. My little one likes pointing out all the animals on the pages. Highly recommend.

About the Author

Carolyn Crimi is the author of numerous picture books, including Boris and Bella, Where's My Mummy?, and Don't Need Friends. She was born and raised on Long Island, New York, and now lives in Illinois with her husband and pug.

David Roberts is the illustrator of A House Called Awful End and the other books in the popular Eddie Dickens Trilogy, as well as the picture books Rapunzel: A Groovy Fairy Tale and the Charlotte Zolotow Honor Book Mrs. Crump's Cat. It's all in your perspective

Tabby D. Cat is a hungry alley cat who will solve the problems of the animal world in exchange for food. In typical "Dear Abby" fashion, Tabby receives and answers letters from animals of all stripes. There's spoiled fellow cat Boots who doesn't appreciate being fed sardines, being dressed in a sweater, or being carted around in a baby carriage by his little girl owner. There's Manfred the hound dog who's searching for the meaning of life. There's Pauline the parrot who might have a question if she could just stop talking long enough to think of one. And there's Stanky the love-starved skunk, Betty the runaway circus bear, Fizzy the dizzy hamster and Guy the groundhog who's nervous about his first performance.

Tabby not only answers her correspondents in creative and thoughtful ways, she manages to find a convenient and unique solution to improve the life of one of her correspondents - and her own. Just shows what you can do if you change your perspective.

The illustrations are cute and attractive. The page layouts are also engaging, as each is presented in letter format. Tizzy's letter format is especially funny. Toward the end of the book there are a number of classified ads that tell us how Tabby's correspondents' problems have been resolved.

The book is witty and humorous, which will appeal to parents and perhaps older children. Younger children - those too young to read the newspaper or to have heard of an advice column - will be a little baffled. The story works even without an understanding of an advice column, but it loses a lot. I would recommend it more for ages six to ten.

In DEAR TABBY, Tabby gives advice to a cat who is unhappy with her owner, a dog looking for happiness, a parrot who likes to talk but doesn't like to listen, a circus bear who has run away from the circus, a skunk looking for love, a hamster who's stuck running in circles, and a groundhog feeling the pressure of his first Groundhog's Day. Tabby's advice doesn't always seem to hit the mark right away, but she somehow manages to help turn their problems around with a successful solution. In the end Tabby even helps herself when she finds a home with someone to love her, and closes with what just might be her best advice yet. Written in Dear Abby style, and complimented by the colorful illustrations with fonts to match the personalities of the authors of their letters, readers get another dose of Crimi's much-loved humor.

One of the things I LOVE about Tabby is that she’s inclusive rather than exclusive. She doesn't only advise her like species, but also birds, dogs, hamsters, and even trained Circus bears!

She’ll also counsel the wilder critter folks, such as a lovelorn skunk who could be Pepe le Pew’s long lost distant cousin. Well. minus the french accent and “Don Juan” complex…

Author Carolyn Crimi nails the epistolary form. Each exchange between the animal inquirer and Tabby short and sweet with tons of personality.

David Roberts illustrations have this hip and slick retro style that still feels contemporary, and in this era of digital communications, seeing the use of paper, pencils, and typewriters delights the nostalgia buff in me.

Charismatic View On Being Filled With the Spirit

This book offers a charismatic view of what it means to be filled with the Holy Spirit. The authors also deal with the charismatic gifts of the Spirit such as tongues, interpretation of tongues, and miracles (1 Corinthians 12:7-11).
The book does a good job of presenting the person and work of the Holy Spirit from a biblical persepective. The authors also do a good job of sharing various Christians stories and experiences with the Holy Spirit.
My only reason for giving this book four stars instead of five is the authors failed to deliver a strong charismatic theology and they did not present other Christians approach to being filled/baptized with the Holy Spirit. I believe a good chapter on others approach would have been helpful. Overall, this is good book if you are interested in a charismatic approach to the person and work of the Holy Spirit.

About the Author
Barbara Kiefer is an Associate Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Teaching at Teachers College, Columbia University where she teaches courses in Reading and Children’s Literature. Originally trained in art education, she taught grades 1-5 in several regions of the U.S. and in overseas schools. She has served as chair of the Elementary Section Committee of the National Council of Teachers of English and as a member of the NCTE Executive Board and was a member of the 1988 Caldecott Award Committee of the American Library Association. She has also served as chair of the NCTE/CLA notable Trade Books in the Language Arts committee and the Children’s Book Council/International Reading association Joint Committee. She has published articles and book chapters about reading and children’s literature. She is the author of THE POTENTIAL OF PICTUREBOOKS: From Visual Literacy to Aesthetic Understanding, the co-author of AN INTEGRATED LANGUAGE PERSEPCTIVE IN THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL with Christine Pappas and Linda Levstik and the sixth and seventh editions of Huck et al.: CHILDREN’S LITERATURE IN THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

Called to coach book

The book itself was ok as far as no damage to cover etc., however on the top of the pages there was a swipe with large black marker and a library name and code. I am assuming it was a discontinued library book but since it was a gift to my grandson it wasn't very acceptable with that on it! To me, when something is advertised as nearly new in excellent condition it would have no marks!
