About the Author
Eric Flint is a modern master of alternate history fiction, with over three million books in print.  He’s the author/creator of the New York Times best-selling Ring of Fire series. With David Drake he has written six popular novels in the “Belisarius” alternate Roman history series, and with David Weber collaborated on 1633 and 1634: The Baltic War.  Flint was a labor union activist for many years. He lives in Chicago, IL.

David Carrico's writing career began with short stories laid in the 1632 universe published in Grantville Gazette. David lives in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He is the author with Eric Flint of 1636: The Devil's Opera.

The Jao "span" widens to galactic proportions! Hang on for the ride!

This book takes the Jao universe to a whole new level of drama, excitement, character development, & sheer scope. The "span" of this story is massive compared to its predecessors! Truly a worthy successor - that ends in a universe so much broader than the original that dozens of sequels can (& probably will) be written. Even the Ekhat are no longer just one-dimensional berserkers. I can hardly wait to see how the authors will weave the new ocean they just opened up into their original lake of ideas!

I have a few nits but they're more personal than objective. The story could use fewer combat scenes: by the time we reach the climactic battle at the end the reader is as exhausted as some of the Lexungton's crew. And I'm still disappointed that the author decided to kill off two supporting characters (& left a third in an unresolved critical medical condition) who could have been developed & enjoyed so much more. Also, the aliens all come across as more "human" than ever before: even the Ekhat characters the authors chose to examine are recognizably human in the depths of their chillingly logical insanity. To be fair, it's a rough go to create aliens that the readers will care about without making them relatable on a human level. I also think this humanization trend was to some degree an inevitable result of so drastically expanding the dramatic & literal/physical scope of the story. Nevertheless, I hope future sequels will come back to more carefully exploring the alien aspects of some of the characters - one point that made the very first book so memorable. My one worry about the otherwise fantastic change in direction this book makes is that it's heading at warp speed toward looking more like Star Trek than the Jao Empire.

Looking forward to the next one

I've liked all three of these books. It's too bad it took so long for this book to be released. Hopefully number four will come soon. Overall great book with good writing and characters.

My only criticism (spoiler) is the amount of time spent on the boarding party attack by the ground troops in the last battle scene. Seemed very out of place. It is a fleet battle...spending that much time on a boarding party action when the enemy ship was disabled was kind of silly. In fact, even sending the boarding party makes no sense in the larger battle plan. It was like the authors felt they needed a certain percentage of ground group action in the book and used this to get there.

Good book, not great, but if you're reading the "Empire" series, get it

Interesting continuation of the "Empire" series by Eric Flint, but David Carrico is just not as good an author as K.D.Wenworth was. The new aliens just seem a little flat here. There was much more development of the "bad guys" this time, which was interesting, if not as well done as the Jao in book 1.

Books leaves us with the "end of the beginning" complete,seems like much more to come

J'ai participé aux naissances, aux mariages, aux crémations, aux fêtes des hindous, des musulmans, des sikhs, des chrétiens et de toutes les communautés de cette mosaïque de peuples et de religions. J'ai tiré des rickshaws et roulé des "bidi' dans les ateliers-bagnes où des enfants de six et sept ans confectionnent plus de douze cents cigarettes par jour. J'ai fait la queue entre minuit et trois heures du matin pour aller aux latrines (il y a une latrines pour 2500 habitants) et j'ai appris à me laver de la tête aux pieds avec moins d'un demi-litre d'eau.
