If you are a solo indie designer/developer I strongly recommend reading this book. The author, in my opinion, has done the best job in explaining the foundational principles of game design. I have read several game design books over the past 3 years to learn how to design games, and then to development. Granted it has been a part-time effort as I work full-time, but I wish I had read this book first. The others I have read seem to be geared to serious game design students in a formal course of study; or new game designers working in a AAA studio. I learned some,but had to filter a lot of the material as it didn't seem to fit the solo, indie designer/developer. Ernest Adams shoves that approach aside and gets down to the very basics all game designers need to understand, regardless of genre or style of work. He presents the material in a clear and understandable prose with examples from all genres to demonstrate their universality. After reading this book I would also highly recommend reading Ernest Adams other book Game Mechanics (see my review).

The beginning and the end of game design books

Written by the man who founded the IGDA, this is the best starting point to understanding video game design. Written like a true textbook I found the information to be very relevant, concise and well organized. The assignments and questions at the end of each chapter are designed with real world situations in mind. It is rare that we game designers ever get to build for ourselves. More often we are working for development companies and the exercises have this in mind. I hope they update this sooner rather than later as the information does not have much about motion capture or the new motion interfaces but hopefully they will include more in the next edition. Awesome resource that I recommend for beginners to intermediate.

Adams is a terrific author - he provides simple, clear guidelines for Game Design. I had a question about the book and emailed him and he got right back to me very quickly! Awesome.

I just can't say enough about this book. Buy it and read it is all I can say - if you're serious about game design you will find what you need in this book.

Exclusive Magical Secrets was originally published by The Magician Ltd as a limited edition of 1000 in 1912. It was bound with a lock on the cover and became known as "The Locked Book of Magical Secrets". The author, Will Goldston, was born in 1878 in Liverpool and first went on stage under the name Carl Devo. He later became the manager/buyer of Gamage's Theatrical and Entertainment Department. Goldston was an early member of the Magic Circle but resigned and formed his own society - The Magicians' Club of London with Harry Houdini as President, a post he held until his death. He set up in business as William Goldston Ltd in Aladdin House near Leicester Square in London where he sold "magic tricks". The business was later bought by Davenports, the famous London magic shop. He edited a number of publications: Magician Annual (1907-1912), Magician Monthly (1904-1913), Magazine of Magic (1914-1930) and Golston's Magical Quarterly (1934-1940). If he had been alive today it is likely that Will Goldston would have been one of the most famous people in the world of magic. As it is his legacy stands, not only in his writings but also in the inspiration he gave to future generations of magicians. Like many other books of this era some of the tricks described use substances and methods that would be considered dangerous today and are most likely unobtainable. However, as magicians are always re-inventing old tricks in many cases there are simple substitutes. You are warned, however, not to take any risks. As with other offerings in The Golden Age of Magic series this volume is not a straightforward reproduction of the original text. There are a number of reasons for this. The main one, as with almost all early books, is that the typefaces used frequently make reading a chore rather than a pleasure. There is also the fact that the original printings were poorly edited, resulting in spelling errors and sometimes mistakes which completely alter the meaning of the text. Wherever possible we have endeavored to reproduce illustrations from the original to the highest possible standard and, in many cases, have been able to improve them. However, you should be aware that some illustrations in the original books were, themselves, copied from documents that were then many years old and some reproductions may not be to present day standards. However, we have taken the liberty of producing the book to make it both accurate and accessible. We would hope that, were the author alive today, he would very much approve of this edition.

For those who are experience and looking for a reference manual, this is it. It has technical information that you can refer to on just about anything you many want to know. From basic arc welding, trouble shooting, shielding gas data, weld design and geometry, etc.

If you do a lot of welding, this is a handy book to have.

A co-worker recommended i by this book and i found it to be both comprehensive and informative. I am an engineer and my co-worker is a welder and we both refer back to this book, all be it different sections. If i could just find a book like this on press brake operation i would be in heaven.

You could really just go with the previous version

After I rented this book, my professor said that we could've just gone with the previous version (6th Edition) because it contains the exact same information with negligible changes to the content. Would've been nice if the professor mentioned this before I rented the book and saved me some money, But glad Amazon rents textbooks and very comparable prices.

I agree with this book

The reason I say that I agree with this book is because a majority of this book that informed of what I should do as a supervisor was what I would have already done in that situation so for me the only things I learned from this book was the technical terms for what some things were called and some laws involving ethics. this means to me that either A this book is filled with relatively common knowledge or B I would just make an awesome supervisor because my instinctual thought process gives me all the right answers. I would recommend renting this book before you make the decision of buying it. I wont be buying this book because laws and technical terms was the only thing it helped me with in that case I believe I can find a better book but if you need help deciding what to do as a supervisor then perhaps this book is meant for you.

Payoff 1 How to Destroy Motivation, or: Work as a Prison Movie Why it’s astonishingly easy to demotivate someone
Life is never made unbearable by circumstances, but only by lack of meaning and purpose.

A few years ago, I was invited to speak about the topic of decision making to a group of a few hundred engineers at a big Seattle-based software firm. During the years before I met them, the mandate for this carefully recruited, experienced, and brainy bunch had been to create something fabulously innovative that would become the next big thing for this staid software company.

The engineers dove into the challenge with enthusiasm. They conducted tons of research. They built an almost-working prototype. They were all proud of their work, having spent long hours—including evenings and weekends away from their families—to make this awesome thing happen. They believed their invention would transform their company and make it the innovation giant it should have been.

After a short introduction, I started talking about some research that I was working on. I began by describing a set of experiments that Emir Kamenica (a professor at the University of Chicago), Drazen Prelec (a professor at MIT), and I had carried out—studies that unexpectedly resonated with the engineers.4

In these experiments, we asked participants to build some Lego Bionicles. These are marvelously weird Lego creatures that kids can creatively assemble in many different ways. We picked Bionicles as the object of our investigation because the joy of Lego is almost universal across cultures and ages, and because building with them resembles, at least conceptually, the creative process that is so central to innovation in the workplace.

We divided the participants into two different conditions. We offered the participants in one group $2 for the first Bionicle they built. We told them that at the end of the experiment, we would disassemble the Bionicles, put the pieces back in the box, and use the same Bionicle parts for the next participant. The participants seemed perfectly happy with this process.

After these participants assembled their first Bionicle, we placed their completed creations under the table for later disassembly. We then asked: “Would you like to build another one, this time for eleven cents less, for $1.89?” If the person said yes, we gave him another one, and when they finished that one, we asked, “Do you want to build another?” this time for $1.78, another for $1.67, and so on. At some point, the participants said, “No more. It’s not worth it for me.” On average, participants in this condition built eleven Bionicles for a total take-home pay of a bit more than $14.

The participants in the second condition were promised the same amount of money per Bionicle, so they had the same financial incentive. But this time, as soon as they finished building a Bionicle and started working on the next one, we began disassembling their completed Bionicle. Right before their eyes. Once we finished undoing their work, we placed the parts back in the box.

The first group built their Bionicles in what we called the “meaningful” condition, so called because they were allowed to feel that they had completed their work satisfactorily. We called the second condition the “Sisyphic” condition—named after the ancient Greek story about Sisyphus, who was condemned by the gods to roll a boulder up a hill only to have it roll down again and again for eternity. Those in the Sisyphic condition managed to build an average of seven Bionicles—four fewer than those in the “meaningful” condition.

As I described this experiment to the engineers, I added that we also looked at individual differences in terms of Lego love. Some people are naturally enthusiastic about building Bionicles, while others not so much. We wanted to see how this individual difference translated to productivity. In the meaningful condition, some participants were unenthusiastic about making Bionicles, so they made fewer of them. In contrast, those who loved making these creations were happy to assemble them for relatively small amounts of money. Basically, people who loved the task kept on going because they enjoyed the process and found meaning in it. (Of course, we weren’t talking about Meaning with a capital M. These folks weren’t curing cancer or building bridges; they were building plastic toys, and they understood that their creatures would be taken apart quite soon.)

But here’s what was so interesting: In the Sisyphic condition, we discovered that there was no relationship between the internal joy of making Bionicles and productivity. Those who weren’t terribly excited about Bionicles created about seven of them—the same number as those who loved building them. In general, we should expect that those who love Bionicles would build more of them, but by dismantling their creations right before their eyes, we crushed any joy that the Bionicle-loving participants could get out of this otherwise fun activity.

As I was describing these results, one of the chief engineers stopped me. “We completely understand the experiment you’re talking about,” he said, “because we’ve all just been part of the Sisyphic condition.”

They all nodded in sorrowful agreement. The chief engineer continued talking. “Last week, our CEO told us that our project was canceled, that the whole initiative was going to be scrapped, and that soon we would be assigned to other projects.”

Up to that point, I had wondered why the people sitting in front of me were so lethargic and depressed. Now I understood.

“Your situation,” I told them, “is also the way that some movies depict breaking the spirit of prisoners. Does anyone here remember the famous prison-yard scene from the movie The Last Castle?”

Several people nodded. In the movie, Robert Redford plays the role of Eugene Irwin, a court-martialed three-star lieutenant general who is sentenced to ten years in prison. Soon after he is imprisoned, he challenges the warden over the bad treatment of prisoners and is punished for insubordination. His punishment is to move enormous rocks from one side of the prison yard to another. The task is so daunting that many of the prisoners think he will pass out before finishing; others cheer him on. After hours of back-breaking work, Irwin manages a final push of energy. He pulls up the last huge rock, carries it across the yard, and drops it triumphantly onto the pile. The prisoners go wild. It looks like a happy ending—until a few seconds later when the warden tells the prisoner he’s not finished with the job and orders him to put the rocks back.

A book that truly touches your soul. I have respected and enjoyed Dan's work for years and did attribute some of his motivation to his accident. Only today, after reading Payoff, was I able to fully appreciate the magnitude of its influence on his life's work.

Not only is the message strong, the presentation is absolutely compelling. I had come back home after getting a haircut and noticed a small package at the door which I opened to find a copy of Payoff. I stood in the driveway and started to read it. I could not put it down. As my legs began to get tired, I went to the backyard, sat on the deck and continued reading.

A hour later, my wife noticed my car in the driveway and came looking for me and wondered what I was up to. Given that my life involved a painful accident followed by years of slow and frustrating recovery, this book spoke to me at a very different level. I finished it in one sitting. Thank you Dan for writing a 103 page book :-)

My hope is that each of you will read this book and gain the insights without having to go through the painful experiences yourself. That has been my mission in life, but it doesn't seem to work very often. I pray that more people will learn from other people's experiences.

Dan Ariely has done an amazing job with Payoff and I wish that many people will use it to achieve peace and joy in their lives.

A Short, Interesting, Ted-Talk, Quick Read about Motivation That Makes You Think

As a general rule, I read just about any book or article written by Dan Ariely. So I was thrilled when I heard about his latest book, Payoff: the Hidden Logic That Shapes Our Motivations. So I pre-ordered it from Amazon and low and behold, it arrived on the day it was published. Interestingly enough, it was published by TEDBooks, an arm of the TEDTalks franchise. (Brilliant business model….extend the life of a TED Talk through a single focus/message book!)

So PAYOFF is based on Ariely’s October 2012 TED Talk, “What Makes Us Feel Good About Our Work?”. It really is a mash-up of previous writings, but I’ll forgive that for now. Payoff is a quick read (2 hours tops – precisely halfway from PHX to EWR), and gives you just enough sense to recognize that motivation is not as straightforward as we would like it to be.

Ariely has a unique gift to blend the academic with rhetoric, providing compelling stories that grab the readers’ attention. His ultimate premise? (Spoiler alert: “To motivate ourselves and others successfully, we need to provide a sense of connection and meaning – remembering that meaning is not always synonymous with personal happiness.”)

It’s the road that leads us to this conclusion that is worth reading – as well as the impact of his words. Within the story, he talks about a group of engineers who were motivated to work on an intense project, only to have the proverbial tablecloth pulled from them. What happens to motivation? Or when a mother calls to have Ariely visit her burn-victim son facing similar challenges he himself faced as a young man. Where’s the motivation to go relive that experience and talk to him?

It’s a compelling short novel-talk that gives you far more insight into what motivates and de-motivates a friend, a family member, a co-worker, or a boss; (hint: it’s not money), and what DOES motivate them. And that’s worth two hours of your time (to read….although to process, it might take a bit more!)

The Paradox of Motivation

What motivates people to do the things they do? As a life and success coach, I've been fascinated by this question for many years.

While most people think money, prestige and status are powerful sources of motivation, the the findings revealed by Dan Ariely in this wonderful and short book are quite different and counter intuitive.

It turns out that "uncountable" things like appreciation, connection and recognition are the primary sources of motivation for most people. Money, quite surprisingly, in many instances will cause people to lose their motivation.

This is a great read which I recommend highly.

About the Author

Karen Martin is president of The Karen Martin Group, Inc., a firm that specializes in business performance improvement and Lean management practices. She's also the author of the Shingo Research Award–winning The Outstanding Organization, an instructor in the University of California, San Diego's Lean Enterprise program, and an industry advisor to the University of San Diego's Industrial and Systems Engineering program.

Mike Osterling provides support and leadership to organizations on their Lean transformation journey. Prior to consulting, Mike played a key internal role in Schneider Electric's Lean transformation during the 1990s. He is the cofounder of San Diego State University's Lean Enterprise program and continues to teach at SDSU and other universities.

Using Value Stream Mapping to get real results

Back in the late 1990′s the book “Learning to See” revolutionized my professional life. With lightening clarity I understood what lean flow was about, how I could learn to see the flow, and then make the flow better through kaizen. Working with Bruce Baggaley, (and help from numerous generous people) we set about “Learning to Count” by radically simplifying manufacturing cost accounting around value streams. These were exciting and creative times.

Now 13 or 14 years later, value stream mapping is everywhere. Everyone talks about value stream mapping. Almost every company I visit shows me their maps. This method has become a standard “lean tool”. Value stream mapping is a great success But …..

When you look a little closer you find this success is not so good as you think. There are many companies that have value stream maps on the wall that have no valid data. It’s common to be shown a current state map with no future state. Or you find a value stream map that addresses just a small part of the flow – totally missing the point. Other times I find beautiful looking diagrams created by powerful MapO’Matic software, but the maps are hidden inside computer systems and not really used for anything; and life goes on without any real vision for flow.

Like most good things, value stream mapping has been watered down and rendered impotent.

Karen Martin and Mike Osterling have written an excellent book that shows you step-by-step how to do value stream mapping and do it right. In their short and readable *”Value Stream Mapping”* book Martin and Osterling have laid out the authentic way to map value streams.

The book starts with defining what value streams are and why we need to map them. Then it takes us through the steps required to create a current state map, develop a vision for future excellence, and then how to map what that future will look like. Most importantly, the authors clearly show how we can create a practical action plan to achieve the lean changes we need to make.

If you follow this book, you will be using value stream maps the right way. The way that gets you the profoundly radical change required to better serve your customers and create unprecedented profits and agility.

The added bonus that sets this book apart is that the authors focus on processes in a wide range of industries and professions. You won’t feel like the maps work in factories but not in my office. Chances are your kind of processes are included in the examples.

I am hoping this book becomes a “lean classic” because then everybody can learn how to see, to understand, to improve, and reap the huge benefits of truly lean kaizen

Valuable addition the the Lean and VSM literature

How does Value Stream Mapping by Karen Martin & Mike Osterling joins the ranks of the best books on mapping and transforming value streams (material and information flow processes across the enterprise). The book differs from others in that it does not focus on the mechanics of value stream mapping itself. Instead the emphasis is on physical, social and logistical preparation around mapping a value stream. For the expert in value stream mapping, this book provides useful advice on how to embed VSM within the management of an overall change effort. For an experienced change leader without background in VSM, this book provides a good overview of its what and why. For the leader who is new to the above, the book provides guideposts for empowering the rest of the organization to take a stab at value stream mapping.

The six examples of current and future state value stream maps included in the Appendices, drawn from the authors' real experience in across business environments as various as Outpatient Imaging Services, Purchasing, Repair Services, Shelving Systems and Software Development, are a valuable addition to the literature.

Much of the "how" in this book surrounds activities peripheral but important to the mapping itself, such as setting the stage, laying the groundwork, defining the charter, forming the team, "socializing" or communicating the charter, and similarly organizing to implement the transformation plan after mapping. For the actual mapping activity itself, useful explanation is provided on conducting value stream walks, filling out data boxes and asking probing questions about the current and future state.

This book will turn many more people on to the power of value stream mapping and give people the courage and confidence to know that there is a way through the confusion and waste of everyday processes.

Value-Add in Value Stream Mapping

In Learning to See by Shook and Rother, I learned how to illustrate a manufacturing process or value stream to illuminate the waste in that process. Keyte and Locher helped me refine the tool and apply it to non-manufacturing environments in The Complete Lean Enterprise: Value Stream Mapping for Administrative and Office Processes. Armed with these basics, I've led many mapping events, and being honest, some were successful while others were not.

Value Stream Mapping by Karen Martin & Mike Osterling is the missing piece that will help me go from how-to-map to how-to-be-more-successful in helping with the continuous improvement efforts in my organization. Learning how to have conversations with upper management, using value stream maps as the vehicle for strategic talks, was an aha moment for me and something I hadn't found in other books.

I would recommend this book to all change-agents, and all mappers (beginners and experienced). For those organizations that have the wall-decorating, unused value stream maps gathering dust, this book will help put the value-add back in value stream mapping.
